Suzi Feay Financial Times A poignant moment. Rated: 4/5 Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) It is good, clean, life-affirming quality slapstick and there's not a lot of that about. Rated: 3/5 Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Samuel Fishwick London Evening Standard This is safe, costume comedy. Three seasons in, there's a nagging feeling it hasn't stepped out of its slippers. Aug 29, 2018 Full Review David Nice The Arts Desk There are still poignant comparisons between past and present, but for all the consummate pacing from Mitchell and Whelan, let this be the last lockdown comedy. Enough, no more, it's not as funny as it was before. Rated: 3/5 Dec 28, 2020 Full Review Kyle Smith National Review Anything goes, as long as it's good for a laugh, and most of it is. The show is such a cheery, cheeky thing that it could prove a gateway drug for young folks. Apr 2, 2020 Full Review Alison Graham Radio Times It's little more than a passingly intellectual, very broad pantomime. But hey ho, Upstart Crow harms no one, it's got a good heart in its own way, and it's so daft it's impossible to despise. Apr 12, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

andrew b Look, I'm a big fan of Ben Elton's writing, I have all his books, I think Blackadder was the best series I've ever seen, I recently saw him live, and had an incredibly enjoyable time with his new routine. Upstart Crow is funny, there is no doubt in my mind that it is well written and very clever, but it's inconsistent. I think the central conceit is pretty good, getting the untold story of how Shakespeare's life presented him with the material for his plays, but the show seems to wonder if Shakey is the good guy or the bad guy. A balance beautifully struck in Blackadder. The acting is good. The writing is often very good, just not always. Maybe he needed Curtis to help out. I enjoyed all 3 seasons. the ending is Jarring but there was no investment in Hamnet at all as a character, how are we supposed to care. It's not like in Goes Forth. It does not fit. New jokes, Ben, please. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The best season yet - Simply brilliantington! And a very moving final episode. More please!
