What to Know

Critics Consensus

Wednesday isn't exactly full of woe for viewers, but without Jenna Ortega in the lead, this Addams Family-adjacent series might as well be another CW drama.

Nick Schager The Daily Beast Misbegotten on almost every front, it mines its name-brand IP for familiar romance and horror, and proves all the more depressing for being the handiwork of the very artist who decades ago pioneered such macabre teen terrain: Tim Burton. Jan 30, 2023 Full Review Geordie Gray The Australian These reboots usually suck (see: Tales of the City) but, to my surprise and delight, Netflix’s new Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday, works a charm. Dec 3, 2022 Full Review Nina Metz Chicago Tribune It works best when it’s simply being funny. The heavy plotting around a mysterious supernatural something or other? Very, very mid, but you need something to propel the story forward enough to stretch it out for eight episodes. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 1, 2022 Full Review Branyan Towe Loud and Clear Reviews Wednesday offers an interesting new take on the titular character, with Jenna Ortega portraying what is the best version of Wednesday Addams to date Rated: 4/5 Jul 29, 2024 Full Review Tamma Moksha The Hindu Tim Burton's macabre and magical tribute to the misfits and outcasts... Jun 11, 2024 Full Review Rick Bentley KGET-TV (Bakersfield, CA) Jenna Ortega does a masterful job of finding the right angst and macabre comedy to play the young member of the Addams Family. Steve W Very good show by Tim Burton that is very unique and dark! Can't wait for season 2 in August and September. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review jolin t In conclusion, this is complete trash. Also, CGI is terrifyingly bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/27/25 Full Review K K OH GOD, well no, not really. As God's interests perhaps reside in things other than dressing up, pretending, role-playing or telling stories via TV shows, movies. Although some might just think God is impressed with, say, Netflix and the person(s) running it by having a business of dressing up and role-playing. Is this an interest of God? Hmm, I would not know as I am not God (thankfully, and I have no clue). The position and riches one gathers on earth are not likely to impress those on the journey. Yet God is raised here as the Netflix leader tosses the term around. As for any country taking over the world or not, I would say "please don't let any one country take over the world". As much as Netflix would perhaps prefer to have streaming and consumers completely going at home watching, there is hope that movies will continue to exist. Perhaps if operations at theaters improved (clean, concessions strong, customer service helpful, proactive employees) and movies put into theaters were allowed time for audiences to watch (many won't go to theaters if they know in a few weeks or months that the movie will go to streaming), then consumers would return and support movies and be able to take part in movie experience with other audience members. The leaders in movies and studios who don't buckle and jump onto all streaming (this supports Netflix profits and business)is the future can in fact prevent movie theaters from disappearing. Netflix is the business behind Wednesday. Who runs and operates the shows and movies we watch is important to understand. As for the show on Wednesday, I am partial to movies (perhaps make a movie of this show too, although the Netflix leader is unlikely to support such an idea) but recognize the quality of Wednesday. It is wonderful: excellent acting, writing, costumes, hair, music. Ensemble cast with actors of all levels. My one bone to pick is the filming of this show, like so many outside of the Hollywood/LA area. While this happened for a long time. So many are now filmed, say, in Ireland, New Zealand, for a tax credit of millions (so do not pay attention to studios and producers who say that credits and money to film in other countries doesn't matter, it does as it's a business. LA and California need to pick up the game in this area to keep working in LA). Wednesday was filmed in Romania, but the show is supposedly in Vermont. Yet producers and studios need to have some loyalty to a region that, for most, got them going in the business. Yet I can separate not liking the behind-the-scenes business of a show with the show itself: an excellent show. Perhaps I should say OH God thank you for the show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Joey G This was a good show. Not as good as the other stuff that came out around the same time. But I still liked it and am excited for season 2. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review M B Nothing is as a good as Chrisitina Ricci and Addams Family Values BUT... this is an incredibly high production, intelligent and entertaining spin off with a fantastic performance by Jenny Ortega. Episode 4 in Season 1 is better than 90% of movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review Dan W Watched it 5 times through. Easily one of my favourite TV shows. Ever. Great dark humour. Good story. Tons of fun. Enjoy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Read all reviews
