Widowed suburbanite Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) starts growing and selling marijuana to make enough money to support her family after her husband's unexpected death leaves her in big debt. Nancy has associates in her pot-growing business, which include Andy, who is her brother-in-law, and pot-smoking City Councilman Doug Wilson. Then there's the business of trying to keep the whole thing secret from people like her neighbor Celia.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A cheeky comedy about big trouble in a little suburb, Weeds is a dark -- sometimes overly so -- satire centered around an uproarious cast led by a never-better Mary-Louise Parker.

Scott Tobias AV Club Kohan mostly resists the temptation to get too cutesy about her dope-pushing widow, and the exceptionally versatile Parker makes her seem level-headed, resourceful, and real. In other words, a pretty cool mom. Rated: B+ Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Timothy Gunatilaka Entertainment Weekly Weeds caustically satirizes suburbia while peeking into a fringe family business. But unlike its predecessors, Showtime's series deals in a realism that's wincingly close to home. Rated: B+ Nov 19, 2018 Full Review James Poniewozik TIME Magazine The best comic suburban soap on TV, ounce for ounce. Sep 10, 2018 Full Review Matt Paproth PopMatters Light in tone, and it lays the groundwork for many of the themes and issues that the series explores in later seasons. The recent death of Nancy's husband lends some emotional weight to the episodes. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Seth Freilich Pajiba I didn't think it would be so good that it would blow "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Extras" out of the water as my favorite cable comedy. But that's just what it did. May 25, 2018 Full Review Betsy Bozdech Common Sense Media Raising kids (and more...) in the 'burbs. Adults only. Rated: 4/5 Sep 12, 2013 Full Review Read all reviews

Greg M Season one is pretty good. It's unique and reminiscent of Breaking Bad in a build up sort of way. The show doesn't maintain this level of writing throughout the 8 seasons. By the last couple seasons it has all but lost its place. Give it a try, but don't expect it to keep you coming back in the long run. I give it 5 stars as an overall to the whole show, recognizing that in the end, I did watch the whole thing. I won't rate the other seasons though. That's by own blend of balance. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review C F Enough to cut the onions, and has one wondering about what leader is providing general Welfare. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/09/23 Full Review Kasso M Decent. It reminds me of a female Breaking Bad precursor but with weed and more focus on the kids. I'm not invested in every plot line. Some are abruptly dropped, and the pacing can be weird. And it's less serious with fewer attempts to be plausible. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Jason C Great show ever and great season Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Regal R 90/100 - great show in the early seasons, worth watching. cool stoner tv show to watch and follow along with.
