Given the number of overall writing, producing, and acting credits on Raynold Gideon's resume, the fact that he has been able to score not one but two separate Oscar nominations is very impressive. The first came in 1972 via the live-action short "Frog Story." Although there were just two other nominees in the category, he lost to a Norman Rockwell documentary portrait. Gideon's other Oscar nomination came in 1987, when he helped Bruce A. Evans fashion the script for Rob Reiner's timeless coming-of-age tale, "Stand by Me." The eventual winner in the Adapted Screenplay category that year was the handsome Merchant-Ivory production "A Room with a View." Gideon's acting credits are of the throwaway variety, encompassing the projects of friends such as Albert Brooks ("Lost in America") and a single episode of "The Rockford Files." Of his remaining writing-producing efforts, the most successful was the 1984 science-fiction comedy-drama "Starman," which earned Jeff Bridges a Best Actor nomination. On the flip side, Gideon also helped write the script for 1995's "Cutthroat Island."
