SkyRo P "Pocahontas," a beloved classic from Walt Disney, was released during the 1990s Renaissance Era and tells the story of a Native American princess, inspired by a real-life heroine. The film explores the clash of Native American culture with European settlers, particularly the English men who arrived in what we now call the United States. It beautifully narrates the adventures of Pocahontas and John Smith as they navigate their journey together, striving to protect the land and honor Native American traditions. The film's artistic elements—its music, animation, and overall creative vision—are nothing short of breathtaking. It stands as a remarkable addition to Disney’s animated film catalog. The antics of Meeko, the raccoon, and Flit, the hummingbird, provide delightful comic relief and become endearing companions to Pocahontas throughout her journey. Characters like Kokoum and Nakoma add profound depth to the portrayal of Native American culture, contributing some of the most poignant and dramatic moments in animated film history. Additionally, characters like Thomas and the comically charming pug, Percy, enrich the storytelling further. We also encounter wise figures like Grandmother Willow and Chief Powhatan, alongside the despicable villain Radcliffe, who drives the tension in the narrative. "Pocahontas" is a fantastic film that deserves to be appreciated by all. However, it’s disheartening that Pocahontas, as a real historical figure, has not received the same level of recognition as other Disney princesses like Cinderella and Ariel. Her absence from mainstream merchandise and media is regrettable, and it would be beneficial to honor her legacy by integrating her into more stories and products. Regarding the sequel, while it attempted to revisit Pocahontas’s journey, it sadly fell short. The film had the feel of a rushed VHS release, lacking the care and creativity of its predecessor. The plot follows Pocahontas to England and her encounter with John Rolfe, which, while based on historical events, detracted from the original love story with John Smith. The decision to anchor the sequel in reality led to a disjointed narrative that often felt unwatchable. While I have a deep appreciation for the character of Pocahontas, the sequel felt like a disappointing indication that Disney had no further intentions for her, relegating her to a one-time film with a lackluster follow-up. Nothing is really broken about it though it's just messy and not the best executed thing. The animation, music, and pacing isn't bad here but everything else is just average. The love story between Pocahontas and John never feels like it really ties in to the conflict of the European/Indian people tension until the final 20 minutes. It does get better and feel more tense, focused, and more interesting animation wise when it does. Mel Gibson is good in this also. Everyone else though is just kind of ok and a bit forgettable. The music numbers aren't really that catchy and kind of blend in. Visually there not that interesting except for one or two but don't hold a candle to the more superior Disney works. The comedic relief with the racoon and bird is stupid and feels out of place also. And I know this is a whitewash but honestly the message is a good one and I didn't mind that really at all. It's more just the execution gets in the way more than anything here. It's a romance, musical, and adventure that really has trouble making it all mesh cohesively and being focused. If your a die hard Disney fan or big fan of any voice actors in this than check this out. Most would'nt be missing out on much here though. Racism is bad, and the two main characters' facial expressions look weird. Also; Pocahontas was younger in real life, and the Colors of the wind song is kinda annoying.
