Critics Consensus

Pocahontas means well, and has moments of startling beauty, but it's largely a bland, uninspired effort, with uneven plotting and an unfortunate lack of fun.

Manohla Dargis L.A. Weekly The studio has made noise about its bid at enlightenment, as witnessed by its casting of Native Americans... Maybe that is one measure of progress, or maybe it's just the most cravenly shrewd retailing strategy in many, many a moon. Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Jami Bernard New York Daily News Unfortunately, though luscious to look at and painstakingly rendered, Pocahontas is an unusually joyless affair. The adventurous beauty rejects one suitor because he is too "serious," but this movie barely registers on the humor meter. Rated: 3/4 Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Ryan Gilbey Independent (UK) For a film which has been heralded as painstakingly PC, Pocahontas's conscience stretches only to portraying American Indians as human beings which, in 1995, hardly qualifies as a particularly sophisticated perspective. Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Terry Lawson Dayton Daily News Pocahontas strives for Romeo and Juliet-style sentiment, but it is shackled by its own constraints. The lovers can't really rise above the petty jealousies of their elders because, as the film never stops reminding us, the issues aren't petty. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Bruce R. Miller Sioux City Journal The Monets, Manets and Degas of the '90s aren't hanging in some urban art museum. They're in Pocahontas -- and they're about as breathtaking as contemporary art gets. Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Marylynn Uricchio Pittsburgh Post-Gazette At times it's possible to forget completely that it's an animated film, for the characters are so real and engaging. But what truly sets the film apart is its great dignity. Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 17, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A stunning film regardless of the historical inaccuracies. Glorious animation, music and entertaining characters with all the love and warmth that you can expect from Disney. 👌🏻 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Mark J Sadly just not enough happened in this, due to the first half of the film being so slow and boring they then rushed the plot in the second half. Also I say plot there wasn’t much of one. Also it does feel the biggest issues they could have tried to tackle were ignored. Still it looked nice and does have a couple of good songs. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review André M Boring and generick but tollerable Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Garrett B It’s definitely the weakest of the Renaissance Era, but its animation, music and songs help this film’s somewhat underdeveloped plot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Luca F These 3 stars are for Colours of the Wind and the Animal Side Characters. Everything else in this movie was boring. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/25 Full Review Teddy B Visually striking if empty in any other regard, 'Pocahontas' is more a tragedy of an ambitious project led astray rather than an outright boring experience to sit through.
