Josh G There are many wwII style news reels skip this one unless you really want to know about the seafarer organizers. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Stanley Kubrick was able to expand his filmmaking to a grander scale in his 3rd and final short film. It's filled with beautiful shots of massive ships and dives into the everyday life of the people operating the ships. It's pretty long so it drags out a bit but you can definitely see the improvement in Kubrick's filmmaking ability. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review dustin d I found this early Stanley Kubrick documentary fascinating. It is basically a recruitment video for the Seafarers International Union, most likely shot by Kubrick for the paycheck, so it obviously portrays the SIU in a very favorable light. It definitely has Kubrick's eye for photography, particularly as it lingers on SIU members' faces in the union hall. For me, it was interesting to see a facet of work culture from back when the United States had a strong labor movement. It was a very paternalistic work setting, but people were well looked after and had room for negotiation with their bosses. To think the baby boomers got rid of this (for the most part) in exchange for higher paychecks, which would be eaten away by inflation while the benefits would be lost forever. Unforgivable. I found myself looking up the SIU on my iPhone afterwards, interested in joining up, but reality kicked in like 30 seconds later. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member One for Kubrick completist nerds like me only. This is really dull, even at only half an hours running time. Something about the US Navy or something, or their Trade Union or something...honestly, it's really dull. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Hehehe..What A Perfect Little Utopia..Back In The Day When Lunches Were Long, Unions Looked Up To & Life Had Promise...Before Thatcherism, Reganomics & The Free-Market Came Into The Fore, Leaving The Guys In This Doco..Aka 'Howard's Battlers' , To Fend For Themselves..As 'Choice' & Individualism Is The New Flavour Of The Day. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Unlike Fear & Desire, this early Kubrick flick is boring and almost unwatchable. Sorry.
