Mar Diestro-Dópido Sight & Sound Exhilaratingly idiosyncratic, Veiroj's film is ultimately an ode to the blind faith in the transformative power of film. Rated: 3/5 Jan 12, 2012 Full Review Joseph Walsh CineVue An intriguing film that raises some interesting issues about the future of exhibition in the digital, mainstream-centric age, whilst not completely working as a piece of dramatic cinema in its own right. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review paul b A tribute to the silver screen, of its trappings and its ability to reinvigorate as seen through the eyes of an employee at a failing cinema. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Engaging is the right word used by a critic. An interesting tribute to this art form and its presenters. Made in color but printed in black and white, makes for a interesting watch and you almost think this is an old movie till you spot an iPhone advert in a shot. A simple story and don't expect too much, just a simple watch with some good direction and honest acting. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Hard to watch with a distinct lack of pace, but it is also a subtle exploration of cinema being a metaphor for life. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member There are many films, that on the surface, have a tantalising story that instantly instills a sense of nostalgia into my heart. â~A Useful Lifeâ(TM) (La Vida util) is one of those films. Itâ(TM)s the story of a film projectionist, deeply passionate about the history of cinema, slowly watching his beloved picture palace erode under financial and structural defeat. He realises that soon, all that he is passionate about, and all that has kept him going, will slowly be leaving his life. Directed by Frederick Veiroj, â~A Useful Lifeâ(TM) is shot in black and white, creating a grainy, retrospective feel of an inevitable ending. The look of the film, conjures up memories of Italian dramas from the 1950â²s â" that lush loud audio, slightly shifting camera work, and occasional scenes of characters expressing their love through movement and dance. The film does change course at the half way mark, bringing a subplot to the fore, that may disappoint some viewers. But in essence Veirojâ(TM)s decision to make the bold change only drives home further the yearning for things past. Time moves on for the film projectionist, (played by Jorge Jellinek) and so decisions must be made about what to divert his passion and love towards. I found â~A Useful Lifeâ(TM) at times very charming. Itâ(TM)s hard to resist a main character who loves his cinema so much, he personally sits on each chair to test for its structural sturdiness. The first half of the film includes subtle yet effective homages to silent films, and how some cinemas still resist the temptation of commercialisation. â~A Useful Lifeâ(TM) was Uruguayâ(TM)s submission for Academy consideration at the 2011 Oscars. It didnâ(TM)t make the final list of 5 films up for the award. Yet the first 40 minutes of â(TM)A Useful Lifeâ(TM) is a deep, rich love letter to cinema and loss, that still resonates in my mind and heart long after its viewing. The remaining 30 minutes of the film lacked the emotional connection that had been built up. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
