Xan Brooks Guardian 10/21/2010

A bouncy crossbreed of Slumdog Millionaire, Enid Blyton and a Unicef commercial; a film that so dearly wants to be adored and adopted that it seems positively churlish to shoo it away. Go to Full Review

It may be formulaic and linear, it may flinch by too readily blending into fable, but it doesn't hide from the realities. It just refuses to bow to them. Go to Full Review

The intention is Spain, the kids are Uruguay, but the direction and script are England. Go to Full Review

The filmmakers' backgrounds and experiences mean that the film's most picaresque and fairytale-like elements are still grounded in reality. Go to Full Review

08/22/2019 While outdated now - the story revolves around the 2010 FIFA world cup - Africa United is still an uplifting, charming and heartwarming adventure movie and it is a breath of fresh air to not depict Africa as this crapsack world and actually depict it in a more positive light for once. The result? A perfectly enjoyable family-oriented road movie. See more 10/09/2018 Carried by Eriya Ndayambaje, its achievement lies in making you root for them. However, the inexperience of the director shows more often than not, especially in mise-en-scene and dialogue. See more 05/09/2015 Enjoyed every minute of this fun loving movie. Shame on me for taking so long to watch the DVD, which I've had for over 2 years. Great performances, cute cast, engaging storyline, humorous dialogue, and decent commentaries on dreams, goals, child soldiers, and HIV. A Must See!! See more 06/29/2013 Interesting premise, but very poorly handled. Certainly disappointing. See more 04/02/2013 This was poor. A great educational film to shown in all schools across Africa for sure. It keeps deviating into a government advertisement for safe sex, But as a movie, it was poor See more 03/28/2013 An interesting mix, described as 'family friendly', but actually pretty gritty despite the cute animations punctuating the story. In the real world these kids would have failed miserably in such a hostile environment, but it's well done, and introduces a world of child soldiers, corruption and endemic Aids to a non-African audience. A road movie with a difference. See more Read all reviews
