This documentary by famed French director Louis Malle explores the extremity and vibrancy of Calcutta through video clips of its people, art and ceremonies, with limited narration. From the wealthy to the poverty-stricken, from the healthy to the lepers, from slums to palaces and everything in between, no corner of the city is left unexplored. This film provides a canvas on which the brilliant diversity of this city of eight million is expressed in rich color and depth.

Audience Member Worthy companion to Phantom India. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Louis Malle's "Calcutta" was released separately from his "Phantom India", it was shot at the same time during his excursion with the documentary crew, yet it was released separately since Malle thought Calcutta had so much more. True, but I felt "Calcutta" lacked the construction of the "Phantom India" series and I felt the expansion of a 60 minute episode to a 99 minute feature was not as good as it could have been. Oh well. Still an essential part of Malle's India documentaries. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Essentially, episodes 8 and 9 of "Phantom India", edited with more urgency, and less of Malle's personal commentary, letting the brutal images of staggering poverty and waste speak for themselves. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Edited together after the realization that there wasn't enough room in the epic 'Phantom India' series for all of the 'Calcutta' footage he wanted to use, Malle's 'Calcutta' is a stand-alone piece of artistic documentary. Malle's camera lingers on street performers and slum kids, while his voiceover damns the caste system that propagates the city's vile poverty. A brilliant portrait of humanity, refusing to give up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Buen trabajo documental, con imagenes que hablan por si mismas... An exceptional documentary, strong images who talk from itself.. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Malle's documentary focuses on appalling living conditions and social unrest in Calcutta. Having seen umpteen Ray and Ghatak movies, little of this was new to me, but it was still interesting (and quite depressing). But the French are sometimes insufferably eager to point fingers. I'm not one of these "freedom fries" Americans that hates the French. But really, don't they have enough colonial problems in their own past that they don't have to go "tsk tsk"-ing the English over India? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
