Mark Bourne DVDJournal.com [Boris Karloff is] again near the top of his game as the best thing about this slow but effective Victorian who-actually-done-it. Mar 5, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

CodyZamboni Watchable tale of possession. Another solid Karloff performance, which makes up for the low production values. That said, there are moments of shocking brutal violence. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Ted B 3.0 stars; Classic Boris Karloff. This film was at the end of his career, and he still could make a classic horror film. This film had some of the standard elements of the old 40's horror films, but threw a neat plot twist into it to give a mystery flavor. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Ugh - this movie was not good. Maybe it is dated. Pass - there are better movies than this one that cover the same ground. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member When you hear the name Boris Karloff you are almost certain of a good and entertaining movie. However in the case of "The Haunted Strangler", not so much. This 1958 film is not terrible, but in the end is rather dull for a horror film. I also had difficulty following the story. The late Boris Karloff is, as usual, very good in the lead role of James Rankin, a social reformer and novelist out to prove the innocence of a man named Edward Styles. Twenty years prior to the start of the film, Styles was accused of being a serial killer dubbed The Haymarket Strangler. Styles was convicted and hanged for the murders. As Rankin begins his investigation a series of murders very similar to those of The Haymarket Strangler begin. The supporting cast does well too. Especially the late Jean Kent. She steals the show as Cora Seth (Cora! Cora! All the men adore her!) a dancer and singer in a seedy Burlesque Club where The Haymarket Strangler chose his victims. One major liability was Karloff's makeup when he is somehow transformed into The Haunted Strangler. He looks like he was his in the face with a baseball bat over and over. I was never frightened by his appearance though I think I was supposed to be. In the end, "The Haunted Strangler" is just another forgettable horror film As we know, the Late Boris Karloff has done better. Much better. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review joe m Passable Karloff horror film, "The Haunted Strangler" has shades of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The story is weak with a rather implausible plot angle. Most of the acting is rather wooden, other than by Karloff who gives a masterful performance. No need to go out of your way to see this one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review deke p 3 1/2 stars because Boris Karloff excellent making scary faces, & 1958 B & W. Boris looked much older in the face, But he was only 71, & they actually showed him with his shirt off, which we've never seen before, and he had a very good build. i never heard of this movie until sought on the movie channel 1.21.2022 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
