Dowd AV Club An effectively straightforward exercise in suspense, one that further positions Flanagan-who also made the year's well-received Ouija prequel-as a filmmaker with a strong grasp on horror's fundamentals. Dec 1, 2016 Full Review Preston Barta Denton Record-Chronicle In the realm of suspense, 'Hush' stands out as a tightly wound thriller, driven by Kate Siegel’s performance and Mike Flanagan’s direction, which never misses a beat. Jan 23, 2025 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal With time and texture, it’s clear that star / co-writer Kate Siegel and director / co-writer Mike Flanagan are emitting a primal scream about power dynamics. "Hush" feels like a social howl shrewdly smuggled into the guise of genre entertainment. Alejandra C Great representation and awesome concept for a movie. Must watch Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/25 Full Review BadNews R Hush (2016) This is an incredible horror film. It’s one of those hidden gems that gets thrown onto a streaming platform or late-night TV, and you sit down to watch thinking it’s just another random horror — but then you realize, this could actually happen. And that’s what makes it so terrifying. John Gallagher Jr. and Kate Siegel play extremely well off of each other. The casting is pitch-perfect because they aren’t big, flashy movie stars — they’re relatively unknown faces, which makes the story feel more grounded and real. You’re not distracted by “celebrity acting”; instead, you’re locked in with their performances and the raw tension between them. Mike Flanagan (who’s proven himself a genius of horror time and time again) absolutely nailed the direction here. He crafts the suspense with such precision, keeping you constantly on edge, never knowing when or how the killer will strike. Every frame builds dread, and every silence feels deafening. The concept alone — a deaf woman, isolated, stalked by a silent intruder — is chilling. The uncertainty of “is he inside yet, or isn’t he?” creates a paranoia that sticks with you long after the credits roll. It’s frightening because it feels real. This isn’t some supernatural monster or outlandish slasher — this is a scenario that could be happening outside your own front door. Verdict: Hush is simple, smart, and deeply unsettling. A terrifyingly realistic thriller that proves horror doesn’t need spectacle to be effective. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Audience Member I liked the set up and how the plot progressed, until her male neighbor showed up. People knock on her door when they know she’s deaf?? They expect her to hear them even if she is obviously not even close to the door??? Plus, the guy gets stabbed in the neck and is losing so much blood, but can still fight/struggle with the killer and almost win?? Didn’t make any sense! Other than that, it was scary and kept me in suspense in certain parts. Not good but not the worst I’d say. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/05/25 Full Review Jared R Omg! So many chances to do something! I started rooting for the killer! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/25 Full Review Yash B For those who enjoy home invasion slashers, "Hush" is a somewhat innovative one. I do feel that it isn't among the scariest movies out there, but it is a tense one that is often full of uneasy moments and is an enjoyable enough ride. The movie is creative with its limit on dialogue, characters, and locations, which is why I respect it. I felt the movie could have delved deeper into the characters or simplified itself even more to be a short film, because as it stands, the 80 minutes feel a bit repetitive at times. Nonetheless, it is well made and effectively told as a little thrill ride. Overall, it does some creative things, but it doesn't reinvent the wheel, and still delivers the goods fans of this subgenre have come to expect.
