Kate Taylor Globe and Mail Today's YA generation is unlikely to appreciate the monosyllabic performances and stately pace, but Pilote delivers a beautiful film in the tradition of the Quebec canon. Rated: 3/4 Sep 12, 2021 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety A well-produced episodic tale whose incidents and personalities remain too modest to sustain nearly three hours' illustration, given a lack of narrative momentum and one major casting shortfall. Sep 12, 2021 Full Review Alessandra Rangel InSession Film Maria Chapdelaine presented a boring story that stays short on its promise of romantic adventures (three suitors! The opportunities missed!) and dramatic encounters. Rated: C Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Jordi Batlle Caminal Fotogramas With a systematically languid, parsimonious rhythm, sometimes so contemplative that it makes the last stretch wearisome, but yet, it never nullifies the power of its visual strength and composition... Rated: 4/5 Aug 11, 2022 Full Review Paula Arantzazu Ruiz Cinemanía (Spain) The emotional drama, always behind the fierce living conditions, emerges from time to time, like flashes of beauty, a reflection of determination and resistance. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 2, 2022 Full Review William Schwartz Book & Film Globe [Maria Chapdelaine] dedicates so much screen time to the greater Canadian landscape. In the early 20th century, nature was still a very dangerous place. Dec 27, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Jeremy G Perfect acting with minimal and accurate dialogs. Beautiful scenes that immerge us into the action and the feelings of how peoples lived at this time. Outstanding soundtrack to pull everything together. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review c j It is so intimate and authentic, it absolutely takes you back into their world and thus into their lifestyle, thought processes and value systems. The actors have done a wonderful job! What stood out for me was how Maria's 'coming of age' has been handled - just outstanding direction! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Un chef d'oeuvre. Poesie des images, de la lumiere et du rythme. Tres fidèle au roman autant par l'atmosphere que par les reconstitutions d'époques. A voir et revoir. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a hauntingly beautiful film that captivates the essence of pioneer life in the Northern Quebec frontier at the turn of the 20th century depicting the lives of loggers, woodsmen and farmers as well as harsh winters, scorching summers, aloneness and separation from civilization. The main character, Maria (Carole Laure), is absolutely captivating with her humble yet genteel ways, whose character continues to yearn for her first love until the very end of the film. The family bond is strong and although there is little, if any, display of emotions between siblings or the parents, there is love. An absolutely pristine gem of a film that takes you on a scenically beautiful and historical journey through time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member That was one if not the worst movie I have ever seen. Just got back from the theater, not sure how long this movie is but it feels like I just wasted my afternoon watching it. Basically the main character who's name is the movie title had like 20 lines in the movie, no personality, barely felt like she cared about her role. Unnecessary suspense moments before every character talks. Barely anything happens, the movie ends without any definite answers and we're left wondering what we just watched all of this for. I'm sorry but that was terrible. Even the characters with like 3 lines had a better personality than the main character herself.
