Austin B A mind-blowing high wire act of rich philosophically and technologically creative artistry, and fertile ground for anyone who would like to explore further. Even if we can't fully comprehend or even begin to agree with everything presented here, and as fascinating thematically as this unique documentary most certainly is, it is almost equally as involving to just briefly glimpse these brilliant-beautiful humans and just be grateful that their remarkable exploring kind still exist, raw with passion and purpose in their search for what could possibly, someday, perhaps even in our life time, evolve into music in perhaps its purist form yet. My only criticism would be to wish for more samples of audio experimentation and the resulting compositions. But maybe that is the underlying point in all this - to begin to search ourselves. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/28/23 Full Review Kyle S The film Opus Cope: An Algorithmic Opera as an absolutely fascinating look at music, philosophy, intelligence, time, technology, and the future. The movie is centered on David Cope, an algorithmic composer. And we learn quite a lot from him, not just about music but about other various things in life. One of the more interesting things that stuck with me after viewing this documentary is the idea that the ability to predict is a result of intelligence. The camerawork and the directing are well done. And the editing was very good also. If you're looking for a documentary that is very deep and will leave you pondering long after it's over, this one is for you. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Catherane S Music builds on the great composers of the past...Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, et al. This film reminds that our world is informed and changed from these contributions. To think what a gift to the world it would have been if they'd been recorded on film as David Cope is here. I was unaware of him and this was my introduction. Re-configuring music through algorithmically composing with the computer since the '80s, he has created his own original work. In a matter-of-fact conversational way through his own words and what others say about him, insight is shared regarding this creative, multi-faceted man. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Rick I Sci fi or Sci fa? Is this science fiction or science fact? Must music be inspired or can it be random? Is it art or commerce? Is this film obsessed with modern A.I. issues or overly concerned with the A.I. of 30+ years ago. The answer, of course, is YES. So sit back and expand your mind. Contemplate what the film has to say about time, intelligence, and what it means to be human. You will also learn the very timely debate over modern A.I. did not arise overnight. At least one man has been experimenting with this stuff for way longer than you have any idea. Does he have the answers? No. But it will be an interesting intellectual exercise to participate in anyway. Also shout out to the phenomenal score. Ha! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Nicola R Opus Cope: An Algorithmic Opera is a thoroughly interesting look into a facet of creativity we don't get to look at often. It's an absolutely perfect documentary for today, as society ruminates on things like ChatGPT and their role in the world. David Cope has been making his music for a long time, and the way he does it and the results he gets are fascinating. I'm glad Jae Shim and team saw fit to make this film documenting him and his composition work. It's a film that makes you think about the nature of creativity and creation, and the different forms it can potentially take. Well worth watching.
