This was a fun-filled, action-packed Jackie Chan movie that I would recommend to anyone. Unfortunately, itÂ’s horribly dubbed, is a poor transfer and the DVD has absolutely no extras. But none of those things takes away from the movie itself which is a joy from start to finish. The movie tells the story of the evil Dragon Claw master who is out to rid the world of the Snake Fist style of kung fu. He is searching for Pai Cheng-Cheh, the last known practitioner of the Snake Fist style. Pai Cheng-Cheh is in hiding at the school where Chien Fu (Jackie Chan) works doing maintenance (I wasnÂ’t really clear on that part and didnÂ’t know if Chan was doing maintenance because that was his job, or if it was because he was being punished). The two form a friendship and Pai Cheng-Cheh teachs Chien Fu the Snake Fist style. Chien Fu, a cat lover, eventually combines the Snake Fist style with his own style and defends the school, his teacher and himself.

This movie is a thinly veiled re-telling of Drunken Master and the only reason I liked Drunken Master more than this one is because I enjoyed ChanÂ’s character more in Drunken Master. There isnÂ’t a huge difference, but in Drunken Mater his character is a little more cocky and arrogant and that played well with his comedy. The action in Snake in EagleÂ’s Shadow is top notch and is so vastly different than todayÂ’s kung fu movies because of the lack of camera cuts. One can only watch and appreciate the artists involved and their technique and athleticism.

I rate this movie an 8 out of 10 and again, IÂ’d recommend it to anyone.

Everyone has a movie, or a book, or a song that he considers HIS. That he's grown up with, that he knows by heart and that he can always watch and never get tired of.
Well, that's what this movie is for me.
It was the first movie I remember having seen from beginning to end. And after that, I've rewatched and rewatched it. I haven't seen it now for about a year, but I think that I still now it by heart (the German version. haha).
I know, it's not a very good movie. The story is cheesy, the acting is mediocre and the fights are not as good as others are.
But this movie is my Captain, oh Captain. It's my Invictus. It's what made me be interested into storytelling, into movies and also into Martial Arts.
I remember myself watching it when I had a bad time. And I also remember an evening where me and my brother staged the whole movie through, by heart. haha!
Now tell me, what's your Snake in the Eagle's Shadow?

The Eagles Claw clan is lead by a ruthless master who wishes to destroy all other clans. The masterÂ’s use of the eagle claw is unstoppable and he is slowly killing all other masters. The Snake Clan refuses to surrender to the villain; their head master is killed, leaving two descendants for the clan. Chien Fu is an orphan adopted by Master Hung. His job is to keep the school clean and stay out of the way. Quite often Fu is used as an example to the other students. One day one of the descendants of the Snake Clan discovers Fu and does not approve of the manner in which he is being treated. Fu is taught the way of the snake. Fu will utilize this technique to prevent being bullied; however, he may find himself in trouble with the Eagle Claw.

Yuen Wo Ping, director of Tai Chi Master, Iron Monkey, Fist of the Red Dragon, Drunken Tai Chi, Dreadnaught, Buddhist Fist, Magnificent Butcher, Drunken Master, and Fire Dragon brings us Snake in the EagleÂ’s Shadow. The storyline is one of the better ones found in a Wo Ping film; it is both fascinating and intriguing. The soundtrack is a bit left field. At times the action sequences seemed to be from a science fiction space odyssey film.

Chien Fu being helped out by the old man, and versus Chin with the fat kid laughing, the trying to grab the bowl scene, versus the magistrates son, versus the champion, versus the priest, and versus the master of the Eagle Claw were JackieÂ’s best portion of the film. Master Hung versus the brick breaker, JackieÂ’s training scenes, the cat versus the cobra, and the old man versus the guy in the woods were also fabulous scenes. The nose picking scenes were also a bit too much in character.

As stated above, Snake in the Eagles Shadow possesses one of the better storylines in a Wo Ping film. The martial arts choreography is outstanding; which is a common theme in all Wo Ping films. This film also introduced the legendary Jackie Chan to the big screen. Snake in the EagleÂ’s Shadow also presented Jackie as a martial artist and not an entertainer, which is how he has been portrayed in just about every film since Drunken Master.
