Critics Consensus

Summer of '84 suffers from an overreliance on nostalgia for its titular decade, but a number of effective jolts may still satisfy genre enthusiasts.

Summer Of '84 never really gives us a reason why these kids should be friends, and although we spent most of the film watching them hang out, the direction is too stiff to call it a proper hangout movie. Go to Full Review

Clunkiness aside, Summer of 84 is a satisfyingly suspenseful adventure, with compelling characters, and a chilling murder mystery at its center. Go to Full Review

A modest little suspense puzzle that simulates rather than builds on vastly better 'my neighbor may be a murderer' stories from Rear Window to Stranger Things. Go to Full Review

Summer of 84 was a fun movie that any casual fan of horror would enjoy. If you get done with Stranger Things and feel like you need more 80’s nostalgia, this is a great movie to scratch that itch. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, spending any amount of time with Davey and his friends proves grating, and there's not enough time spent feeling terrified. Go to Full Review

Summer of '84 does many things well. The suspense set pieces are well-staged. The young cast gives convincing performances. Go to Full Review

Aug 31 The genuine teenage rapport between lead Verchere and his buddies saves this not very convincing serial killer thriller from being a stiff, dull flop. There's little actual reason for Davey's disturbingly obsessive fixation on Officer Mackey, and at times Davey comes over as genuinely paranoid and creepy, in need of professional help perhaps, except that of course, paradoxically, we know all along who'll end up being right. Davey and his gang notwithstanding seem like genuine kids and it's fun and activates the required dose of nostalgia to keep you watching. But probably only if you're in your 50s & fit the target audience to be honest. The film is simply way too clunky and the plot too robotic to have much wider appeal. See more Gaberiel S Jul 17 Movie is scripted so stereotypical like if you quickly just thought of what a 80s serial killer film is and wrote the script in 30 minutes and the background for the characters seems so rushed to try and make you care for the characters but it all seems so fake and you can’t relate to the them at all. I just feel like this is a way to entice people who enjoy stranger things and are waiting new seasons for it and are trying to find something similar to it See more Ashton b May 15 So good! It had me hooked from the beginning. The last 20 min had my jaw drop. There was a constant "is he? Isn't he?" Throughout the whole movie. And it was left on a great cliffhanger.
