The Session Man, a 90-minute documentary feature film, tells the story of Nicky Hopkins, the highly gifted and prolific session pianist, and unsung hero. Nicky not only played with The Kinks, The Who, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, he also played on solo albums of all four members of the Beatles in the early part of a stellar career that spanned over 30 years. During that time, he contributed to over 250 albums and a vast number of single releases. Nicky's legendary piano riffs and wonderful musical motifs helped ordinary tracks become extraordinary and iconic. So many of them remain popular today. The generations that followed the Golden Era of Rock And Roll soon discover those iconic tracks that made Nicky Hopkins a legend amongst his peers -- tracks like Revolution by The Beatles, Like A Rainbow, Sympathy For The Devil and Angie by the Rolling Stones, Jealous Guy by John Lennon from his Imagine album and You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker.

Lukas D Well-made documentary about one of the most influencial yet most unknown keyboard players of a generation. Would recommend! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Harriet S This film would have been a must-see if it had only been about Nicky Hopkins' contribution to the Beatles and the Rolling Stone, but watching it we discover his unique contribution to pretty much every major band of the golden era of rock and roll. Piano parts you will recognize immediately shine in this beautiful film about one of the greatest keyboard players of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Edwin K This is a fantastic movie revealing the genius of Nicky Hopkins. He wasn't just the best session player of all-time, he was the best keyboard player of all-time. The best musicians in the world wanted Nicky in their band and on their records. The stories told here tell about the powerful effect Nicky and his work had on his peers. His playing is some special form of rhythmic, melodic magic.Truthfully, I actually teared up a few times. Chopin, sure, but really he is one of a kind. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/24 Full Review Helene K This is a must-see for anyone who wants to learn about true musical talent and genius! Fascinating film about a unique and gifted artist. Every aspiring musician should see this film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Chet N Nicky was clearly, "ONE IN A BILLION"... what a great gentleman and superb talent he was. The wonderful thing about being a man like Nicky is that the memories and music we are left with that are truly endearing and enduring. I had the great pleasure of having Nicky play piano on the title track, "(Spinning On The) Time Loop)", on my first album recorded at Wally Heider's studio in San Francisco in 1972. Nick Gravenities produced the track. Stephen Barncard was the recordist, Pete Sears played bass, Dave Garibaldi played drums and I sang and played guitar. When Nicky came into the studio we sat down, taught him the piano part and I played the song for him. After I was done, he stood there wide-eyed and said, "Good Lord, mate, why did they bring me in to play the piano. You're amazing, really, amazing". I looked at him and smiled and said, "You are being much too kind, Nicky. You're Nicky Hopkins, I'm just a guy making my first record. Nick wants you, and I do, too, to play the piano. Not to mention, since Clapton couldn't make it, someone has to play the guitar and that will be me". We both laughed. He said, "Chet, I like you. You're witty chap. Anytime you need me to play with you, let me know. I'd love to play with you". Nicky then sat down and ran thru the track with me a couple times. It was a great band and Nicky played one of the all-time, best rock 'n' roll piano solos on that track, in my humble opinion. In fact when, we were doing final mix, I insisted they boost Nicky's track and pushed my track back. To this day, as a life-long songwriter and composer, I wish I had had a chance to play with him some more and to have worked with some of the people he worked with, because every track he touched, he sprinkled a lot of spiritual GOLD DUST on it. Thanks to all the people who worked with the director and team who produced this authentic and real tribute to a great man, musician and human being. He lives on in all of our hearts, minds and invisible piano strings we can hear when we close our eyes and remember him. Blessings to you all, Chet Nichols Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Ron N We finally figured out how to watch The Session Man and it is brilliant. Of course we already knew of all the awards that it has received. It certainly celebrated Nicky Hopkins in a wonderful and entertaining way. What a huge amount of work and a hugely successful result!! It really isn’t available in Canada and the way we did it is another story. Hopefully it will be available in Canada soon so that we can recommend it to our friends. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
