Newcomer Katherine Langford plays the role of Hannah, a young woman who takes her own life. Two weeks after her tragic death, a classmate named Clay finds a mysterious box on his porch. Inside the box are recordings made by Hannah --- on whom Clay had a crush --- in which she explains the 13 reasons why she chose to commit suicide. If Clay decides to listen to the recordings, he will find out if and how he made the list. This intricate and heart-wrenching tale is told through Clay and Hannah's dual narratives.

Critics Consensus

13 Reasons Why closes with a chaotic final chapter that betrays what little dignity remained in the tragic lives of its central teens.

Jen Chaney New York Magazine/Vulture The team behind 13 Reasons Why had no way of knowing that audiences would be watching this season in the middle of a pandemic. But that only makes the sadistic nature of the material that much more glaring. Jun 12, 2020 Full Review Robyn Bahr The Hollywood Reporter This show has no business being a full hour long. And it certainly has no business leaving us with an hour-and-36-minute (!) series finale. Jun 8, 2020 Full Review Zehra Phelan 2 Minute Telly Awkward, complex and extremely difficult to watch, It doesn't go out on a fluffy high, but stays true to its issues and discussing difficult subjects, it would break most strong-minded adults, let alone vulnerable teens. Rated: 7/10 Jul 8, 2020 Full Review Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry While season four has its bumps in the road, the lens does not falter, keeping its focus locked on the wreckage these teens not only create for themselves but the issues the world has created for them. Jun 26, 2020 Full Review Maria Sherman Jezebel The show's myopia isn't surprising. If anything, the final season proves once again that teen viewers deserved better than what 13 Reasons Why offered, and if the show is remembered in a few years, it'll be mostly for what it failed to do. Jun 12, 2020 Full Review Alci Rengifo Entertainment Voice Readers may recall how promising this show was at the beginning, when it was simply the adaptation of an acclaimed young adult novel... The final season reclaims only crumbs of that sensibility. Jun 11, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

L F The show clearly wants to deal with hard hitting topics but falls very short and offers melodrama instead. Every scene, every character and every conversation comes in at a 9 or 10 on the intensity scale, which just gets exhausting to watch and leaves the audience wanting so much more. There's no nuance, no light and shade, no character development, it's just one dramatic thing after another, which ironically becomes very dull to watch. I realised my brain had switched off to it all and I didn't care about anything that was going on, so stopped watching and haven't looked back. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/06/25 Full Review Gabriel P Finalmente terminei e como é difícil (devido aos temas e episódios longos). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review K L Could anything be more boring, stupid and meaningless? I actually wished that Clay would have shot himself and put himself out of his misery. If this is an accurate example of the youth in America today, this country is in deep trouble. What does one expect from a Godless society where it's ok to sleep with whomever one wishes and that promiscuous behavior is the norm? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Craig M After 2 horrible seasons I knew it couldn't get a better. I was right, this season was so bad that I was laughing most of the time and couldn't take anything seriously. Clay went from an unexpected hero is season 1 to a mentally ill person who got worse and worse each season. During the last episode I skipped through this horrible mess to see if Alex at least gets exposed as a murderer which he didn't so there is nothing good I can say. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Basia P The show got progressively worse and boring to the point I no longer really cared what was happening. Until they stupidly decided to kill Justin off with the most ridiculous plot twist ever since the disease would have taken far longer to kill him. All I guess for a shock factor that was just completely unnecessary.
