"Deadwood" is set in a mining town that was not part of any U.S. state or territory in the post-Civil War years, and thus was literally lawless. Deadwood attracts people looking to get rich after a huge gold strike, as well as those looking to capitalize on the lack of organized law in the town, built on land stolen from the Sioux.

Andrew Wallenstein NPR Like a Shakespeare play, you may not understand every word, but you'll really like how they say it. Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Austin Smith New York Post About as exciting as watching paint dry. I never knew cowpokes could be such slowpokes. Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Linda Stasi New York Post While the idea is a great one (you know we're ready for the return of the adult western), the dialogue here comes across as a cheap grab for 18-to-34-year-old (stupid) guys. Rated: 2/4 Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand This is frontier Shakespeare. It’s not just a matter of themes but of language. [David] Milch and his writing team script the dialogue with an ear never heard before in screen westerns... May 4, 2024 Full Review Barry Norman Sunday Times (UK) Deadwood, skillfully shot in muted colors that are almost sepia in tone, is rough, tough and uncompromising -- be warned, the language is fierce enough to give a stoker the vapors. Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Jason Cassidy Sacramento News & Review A cast of flamboyant characters, including Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, make up a colorful and lively world where anything can happen. Which is precisely why it's so much fun to watch. Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Jack W I’d rather try touching the moon then consider how anyone gives this show less than 5 stars Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Elvis P It was disappointing that one of the lead characters dies early doors. He was great. I nearly gave this four starts. I’ve done that once before for white lotus. However this is very strong and once I get into the next season I will maybe update the review. I liked Jane with the orphan child,it was so heart meliting Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/25 Full Review Jacob B Flawless. Nothing I can write would do this series justice. If you are not a fan of the western genre and have no interest in watching “Deadwood” all I can say is that you’re missing one of the best shows ever written. The language is like listening to a modern symphony, the characters are as three dimensional as any character written by Dickens or Hawthorne or Williams, the art direction is so detailed you feel as if you’ve stepped into an early photograph, and the script is one that David Mamet would be envious of. One of the shows that truly elevated television. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review John S One of the best shows ever made. Characters are superb - if you can get past the f and c words. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review Chad F For many, this is the greatest show ever. Some of, if not the best writing and acting. Excellent production, splendid sets locations. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review Heavy B This is, in my opinion the greatest series of all time. Hands down. A masterclass in dialogue, and the pacing and character development is just perfect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
