An ambitious corporate executive, Amy Jellicoe has succeeded despite the fact she can be her own worst enemy. After a series of self-destructive choices leads to a very public, humiliating nervous breakdown, Amy spends three months at a treatment center in Hawaii, where she learns to live a more enlightened existence. Upon returning home, however, she discovers her new passionate and honest outlook isn't accepted by her family, friends and co-workers, notably her mom, Helen, with whom Amy now lives, and her drug-addicted ex-husband, Levi. Immersed in a more complicated life, Amy must decide what's really important to her.

Kerensa Cadenas Bitch Media Dern's ability to keep Amy grounded yet go from rage to serenity within a single flinch is incredible. Jan 14, 2021 Full Review Emily St. James Vox They combine to form one of the very best TV shows of the past several years as well as an unrivaled celebration of Laura Dern, a woman who can do anything and who is rarely asked to do as much as she is in Enlightened. Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Rachel Syme The New Republic I have been thinking about Enlightened a lot in 2017. I recently re-watched the entire series and it felt as fresh as anything made this year. Dec 15, 2017 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media Enlightened is a show that will challenge a viewer and frustrate them with Amy's mannerisms, but also a show with such an honest, beautiful philosophy at its core, a quiet mediation about difficult people trying to make difficult changes. Rated: A Feb 13, 2020 Full Review Matt Brennan Paste Magazine By the time Enlightened reaches Todd Haynes' unspeakably beautiful Season Two entry, "All I've Ever Wanted," Amy's journey comes to reflect her repeated statement of purpose, "You can be wise, and almost whole." Jun 2, 2018 Full Review John Powers Vogue Even as we laugh at Amy's loony attempts to forge a new world, we understand, and are moved by, her longing for a purer soul and a kinder society. Audience Member This series was just so well-crafted. Amy is a complex, multi-faceted character with real depth. Laura Dern shines, as does Mike White as her shy, insecure coworker. Luke Wilson does a bang-up job of portraying so many of the dudes I've dated. Brilliant. Such a shame it was taken off the air. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It's really too bad this show never got renewed for the third season in the trilogy, but the ambiguity that runs through the rest of the show gets to live on I suppose. I can't believe I had never heard of this before, its honestly such a great little time capsule of the turn of the decade. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member For a needlessly precise rating: 96/100 Amy Jellicoe is childish, naïve, selfish, self-centered. But she represents the dichotomy of all humans: she is noxious and enlightening, toxic and pure. She has hope. And that's a beautiful thing to have. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The central arc comes to an end but not without feeling cheap in the process (which it plays self-knowingly, to give credit). Some events are rushed, others feel natural but nevertheless hurried, the show is ultimately satisfying but on its own heroine's terms. Compulsively watchable yet sadly underutilized. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member WHY HBO? WHY COULDN'T YOU RENEW THIS FOR ONE MORE SEASONS?! The second season increasingly gains so much momentum. We learn more about the other few characters we even know and are introduced to an LA Times reporter (Dermot Mulroney) and the receptionist to the Abaddonn CEO (Molly Shannon) who only accelerate the drama and rhythm of the series. We start to root for Tyler and his struggle with happiness and cannot help to fall in love with Eileen's palpable sense of humanity. The discombobulated love triangle that really isn't a love triangle between Amy, the reporter, and her ex-husband is an even great sub-conflict in the season. Each episode gains so much momentum and excitement, it's a shame we'll never get to see what could have been. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member On Enlightened's second season, Laura Dern and Mike White bring together a well-written, supremely acted, both blissful and sorrowful series. It is inspired, rich, fulfilling - poetic, to say the least, and, lastly, enlightened in its own terms - in its short 8 episodes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
