Geordie Gray The Australian This reaches Game of Thrones-level grandeur; throw in some acting greats like James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson, and slick CGI, and you’ve got yourself a succulent adventure story. Nov 28, 2023 Full Review Heather Hogan Autostraddle The TV show is a faithful adaptation, one of the best kinds, staying true to both the plot and the spirit of the original books. But... the writers made one major change that adds a whole lot of poignancy to the final chapter. Happily, it’s a gay one! Dec 29, 2022 Full Review Laura Miller Slate In its third season, His Dark Materials finally strikes the right balance. Dec 27, 2022 Full Review Martin Carr We Got This Covered This season 3 conclusion to Philip Pullman's trilogy is epic on every level. Majestic locations, thought-provoking themes, and headliners Dafne Keen and James McAvoy on solid form throughout. Essential viewing for fans of the source material. Rated: 4.5 Jan 11, 2023 Full Review Akash Singh That Shelf What the show lacks, however, is the sense of wonder that was present in the books. Jan 10, 2023 Full Review Alison Lanier Pajiba Whatever its shortcomings, His Dark Materials takes an epic attempt at an epic story and delivers in surprising ways, and it engages deeply with the life of its story. It’s well worth the journey. Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Istari D Very impressive special effects, the series goes deeper and depper and fulfill its purposes. The final is just amazing and very convincing. Only the part in the world of the deads is maybe a bit too repetitive, dark and annoying. But anyway, defo worth to be watched. The serie is very faithful to the books. I can defo recommand it, from the 1st episode to the last. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Jessie Newburn Writer N I've always been a fan of coming-of-age stories, and I enjoy reading them and other young-adult fiction. And, well, I rather like a super-hero/chosen-one type of story, too. So, some years ago, after hearing quite a bit of chatter about Philip Pullman's "The Golden Compass" and "His Dark Materials," I read them, loved them, and was delighted the books mixed so many genres and story lines I enjoy. I was floored by the happy-yet-not-Saccharin-ly-sweet ending. Not much of a visual thinker, I don't often see what's happening in books. I rarely have a sense of what characters look like, and I often forget plot lines after reading a book. Books are more like experiences to me than memories I hold. When I heard the books were being made into a TV series, I was game to watch them and have watched an episode or two or three at a time. This evening, I finished the series, and while I'm not going to do any spoilers for anyone yet to read the books or watch the series, I will say I loved how they handled the final ending. Not the climactic fight scene seemingly necessary for super hero/chosen one stories, but the final, final scene. I found it quite touching, just as I did when I read the books. What about you? Did you read the books? Like the ending? Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review andi p the costumes, sets, and daemons are brilliant. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Ted C I love the book series and I love the miniseries in its entirety. If you're religiously sensitive, you may want to skip this one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/23 Full Review Fred N It is probably the fault of the source material (which I haven't read), but each season got worse. Multiple preposterous plots end with unmotivated improbable resolutions. Interesting world-building and good special effects are doomed by main characters who are all erratic, arrogant, and selfish. Viewers (as well as characters) wonder what was it all for when--out of left field--the deserved happy ending is arbitrarily prohibited. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/23 Full Review D J Every episode and season of this series gets progressively better and better. Absolutely amazing series.
