John S Decent enough pace to the series and plot as it builds though the characters are just feeble caricatures. When it starts to reach a climax it just ends with a damp squib and gives up completely. Thoroughly feeble conclusion. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review Audience Member Disclaimer: I watched the first season. I couldn't watch more... The ideas in the plot are good! But the whole thing is written by people that does not understand how things work... The characters and dialogs are really bad. They are caricatures of good / bad / stupid archetypes, over the top for a show that wants to be serious. The characters are as credible as the first excuse of a kid for why they didn't do their homework / chores. If you watch light things without paying much attention this can work. A lot happens each episode and it could be entertaining. If you enjoy coherent characters and good dialogs, avoid this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Prabhudas K Finally a great series, Loved every episode. Perfectly paced, wonderful casting, great acting. Congratulations producers, you nailed it!! Love to see many more like this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Anton T BBC tend to know how to do dramas and this is no different. An explosive start sets the precedent, and thus begin a chain of events that ripple throughout the entire series. The beginnings of Arnott, Fleming and Hastings as a trio pulls you in their direction without you realising, and you could easily be seen disliking them at the start for going after Gates but then by the end you are sold on their mission. Lennie James as Gates, his portrayal as a genuine family man who's past mistakes catch upto him and drown him slowly is brilliant, the ideal broken antihero. Yes it's fiction and yes it's dramatised for effect, there's chases and torture scenes which perhaps happen too often for a police drama about corruption but the exploration of the deep and dark recesses of the criminal underworld gives serious thought as to how a small mistake can end up with someone paying the ultimate price. Must watch and thoroughly engaging. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Leaburn O After two episodes had to give up. The plot and acting are both ridiculously poor. I just couldn’t take it seriously. No idea how this show has gained such popularity. Typically rubbish BBC production. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Bob S Warning: The fine acting and gripping fast pace of this season's episodes do not justify the scenes of physical torture here, and there should be a stronger warning than usual on this show. No excuse for it. We have many fine shows about the moral degradation of the police, the criminals, the poverty-stricken, the wealthy, and the universe in general without subjecting the audience to this level of on-screen torture. Yes, morality is complex. And the script does a fine job of documenting how a domestic betrayal leads step-by-step to violation of one's major principles in order to avoid detection. But other films do this without making relative heroes of characters who cover up murder and watch torture unfold to protect themselves. This is a story not just about a generally good guy falling into a moral hole, but about someone with a huuuuuuge ego putting himself there. And yes, this script does try to make the character heroic, because not only does the central character convince himself that he is largely innocent, but he convinces the other major character that he is largely innocent, and everyone ignores the original murder. If you want a drama about moral degeneration and complexity, watch the superior DAMAGES (Glen Close) from a few years back, streaming on Hulu. Or if you want to watch relatively good people's sexual affairs resulting in the unraveling of their lives, then watch Richard Gere's UNFAITHFUL. Skip Line of Duty.
