Golden Globe nominee Christina Ricci stars as Lizzie Borden, reprising her role from the TV movie "Lizzie Borden Took an Ax." While the 2014 film examines the crimes for which Lizzie was tried, the series is a fictionalized account of the events that took place in her life after her acquittal in the murders of her father and stepmother. In the aftermath of her trial, Lizzie gains celebrity status. But when people close to Lizzie -- including her half brother and business associate -- begin to die under unusual circumstances, detective Charlie Siringo becomes determined to prove that she is involved in their deaths.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Lizzie Borden Chronicles is too guilty of sensationalism to be a true pleasure, wasting a game Christina Ricci on a serial killer soap that never achieves the mordant irony it angles for.

Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer The series is no less absurd, but it's far more fun than the movie: We all know about the ax murders. It's more fascinating to watch Lizzie continue to weave her web of evil after her trial. Apr 6, 2015 Full Review Keith Uhlich The Hollywood Reporter It's hard to say what it's going for, really. Apr 6, 2015 Full Review Noel Murray AV Club As accomplished as much of the cast is, they have trouble consistently finding the difference between intentionally stilted and just flat. Rated: C+ Apr 6, 2015 Full Review Alex Casey The Spinoff Lizzie is the perfect female anti-hero, reminiscent of Breaking Bad's Walter White with much better hair. Jan 15, 2019 Full Review Rebecca Barry Hill New Zealand Herald Violent, camp and periodically entertaining, the dramatised version, (directed by New Zealand-born Stephen Kay), flashes back to the infamous killings, and throws another few into the mix for fun. May 19, 2016 Full Review Joyce Slaton Common Sense Media Grisly gore and violence in reimagining of murderess' life. Rated: 3/5 Apr 8, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Debbie A I liked it.... It's fictionalised and dark, like Hemlock Groves, Penny Dreadful, Bates Motel like, so yeah I liked it and I love Christina Ricci in her type or roles which are these type of roles, she deserves more recognition I feel. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Audience Member I freaking love this show, im a huge fan. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved Christina Ricci in this series! She was as fierce & definitely had viewers conflicted as ro how to feel about Lizzie after watching her performance. So upsetting they didnt come back with a second season as season 1 leaves fans expecting to be filled in on all the open ended plots simultaneously happening. Unfortunately we are left only with her great performance, a sudden need to research historical events concerning Lizzie Borden's family & life events & perhaps a great imagination we can use to fill in the blanks. Everyone was great in this series from the writing, acting, directing, costumes design too the settings & atmosphere... everything worked together creating an eerie sense of looking into someone's darkest moments & explaining them in ways in which the viewers can come up with their own theories for why she is the way she is..... again, the only disappointment is that there won't be more to come. Very disappointed in lifetime. They finally had some good tv that satisfied a larger audience....SMH. whos making these decisions? Clearly they need to hire me lol... bc someone doesnt know what they are doin. Signed, Althea-Mar?iá P. M. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member everything about this series reads as cheap. a period dance scene set to blu cantrell? absolutely lazy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Lifetime retools their Lizzie Borden film into a Dexter-like television series in The Lizzie Borden Chronicles. Season 1 follows the Borden sisters in the wake of Lizzie's acquittal for the murder of their parents as they move to a new house and deal with a private investigator who's intent on bringing Lizzie to justice. Featuring Christina Ricci, Clea DuVall, Cole Hauser, and Jessy Schram, the series has a strong cast that delivers some good performances. However, the writing goes downhill extremely fast. At first it's kind of clever and exciting with Lizzie tying up loose ends and taking out her enemies, but then it starts to get ridiculous with her killing off 2-3 people an episode without anyone catching or suspecting her. And this makes it difficult to develop recurring characters and continuing storylines. Still, the costumes and sets are especially well-done, giving an authentic feel for the time-period. Also the soundtrack brings a lot of energy to the series and heightens the action and suspense. Yet while the show has a lot of things going for it, the bad writing doomed The Lizzie Borden Chronicles to a short lived 8-episode season. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I stumbled up on this just this past week. The Critics seem to dislike this show. I found it more to be a dark comedy and entertaining. The cast, costumes, and setting also makes it better than normal. As a true fan of the Walking Dead and Dexter, this had great potential.
