Having left her job as a CIA analyst for ethical reasons, newly appointed Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord returns to public life at the request of the president, after the suspicious death of her predecessor. Valued by her boss for her apolitical leanings, knowledge of the Middle East, language skills and creative thinking, Elizabeth drives international diplomacy, battles office politics and circumvents protocol while negotiating national and international issues. At home, politics and compromise take on new meaning with her supportive husband and three bright kids.

Carmen Phillips Autostraddle It gave us space to see Kat Sandoval, and Sara Ramirez, in all of her truths. What a sight to behold. Oct 22, 2021 Full Review Elizabeth Harlow TV Line Tea Leoni and Tim Daly kill it on the home front. The kids are great with their one-liners, even if the more involved arcs with them could use some work. Rated: 3.7/5 Oct 3, 2018 Full Review Matt Brennan Paste Magazine Compared to the bomb-throwing excitements of other "topical" series, Madam Secretary's comforting politics are not going to set the world on fire. In a world already on fire, that's precisely the point. Oct 23, 2017 Full Review Elizabeth Harlow TV Fanatic Really, the supporting cast is what makes this show work for me. David d It's interesting how the makers manage to wrap many real-life events into their fictituous story - or the other way around. Iraq, Syria, the Turkish coup - which may have been all staged - and purge, etc. Yet, after xx episodes it feels repititive and predictable. Been there, seen that. Same formula over and over again. First all goes smooth on the State Department front. Then there is an unforeseen development, drama or such. And, usually at the last moment, they have miraculously found a solution. Through a personal link with a foreign dignitary, an unexpected discovery and so on. Also, too much of American patriot overtones most of the time. America must do it, cause no-one else can.... In the music, in the speeches.... yaks... though at times we would really want the US to step in - and kick ass - they should not be involved in everyones business. The Americans call it a show, and that's indeed what it is. Could be send on breakfast tv to quickly divulge and forget. There are nowadays more gripping tv series around. Nevertheless, I myself as well as probably most viewers are still curious what's going to happen next. And that probably explains why it has been running so long. As regards the actors, I do not find Tea Leoni very convincing. Though I understand why the character was developed as it is, like the voice of reason or the 'Dalton whisperer', she could emanate more power and conviction by raising her voice a bit more often, as she rarely does in this series. The way she speaks now is more like a background noise of the wife in the kitchen commenting on finding a bottle of milk that has gone sauer... Also her small eyes bother me. The eye expression of actors being very important on big screen and tv, you cannot see much of hers, unlike for example 'hubby' Tim Daly. On the other hand, I love Zeljko Ivanek as the cynical, emotional yet fast-reasoning chief of staff and Keith Carradine as the president. Ivanek nicely balances the low-key Leoni with his expressive cynical quips. so, this as an explanation why I've rated season 4 a bit lower than the previous, yet I am going to watch till the end of the series, which I have not done before yet. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Audience Member This is the best show on tV. It often reflects real life and the cast and the writing is solid and believable. Few errors and one finds himself immersed in the day to day workings of the White house, or what the white house used to be like. Obviously, it's an idealized view of the workings of the government, especially compared to the government of today. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member LOVe this show for all its political Intrigue! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Love this show - The cast is awesome! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched the first series. It had a glimour of hope. There was some great kind of potential to it. Today I watched the first episode of the 4th season. It really hasn't changed. Today however, I also chose to change my toilet flushing tablets from blue to pink. The pink apparently has the smell of rose blossom and strawberry. Still to smell that. However, back to the program. I have no idea why this has made it to Series 4. It is inspid, unrealstic and totally unatural representation of what could have been a really insightful insight into what it is to be a woman in government. Instead the producers, writers and directors have chosen to candy floss the whole experience with easy wins and difficult situations with easy wins, whilst at the same time having a theology professor as her husband providing a constant moral, if out dated, compass. Add some whiny kids with 'issues' (presumably cos their mom is the new 'Oprah'), and there we have it. Give it a miss. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member From world affairs to family dynamics, this is one of the great dramas in perhaps the golden age of great dramas.
