Bay Kennish is a teenager who grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother. Fellow teen Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age, was raised by a single mother in a working-class neighborhood. One day in her high-school chemistry class, Bay discovers that her blood type doesn't match either of her parents'. Official tests confirm that Bay is not her parents' birth child. When the Kennish family meets Daphne and her mom, Regina, they realize that the girls were switched at birth. The news prompts the Kennishes to allow Regina -- who is experiencing financial difficulties -- Daphne and Daphne's grandmother to live in their guest house. The two polar-opposite families struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls, who try to keep their footing in both the world they know and the new one into which they are thrown.

Carrie Raisler AV Club This season appears primed to show a flip side to the exploration of consequences. Rated: B+ Jan 7, 2015 Full Review Matt Roush TV Insider While Pretty Little Liars gets the lion's share of this network's buzz, I've always been partial to the enjoyably sudsy family drama of Switched at Birth. Aug 20, 2015 Full Review Samantha McAllister TV Fanatic The previews make me a little bit nervous in regards to Bay and Emmett's relationship. It will be interesting to see if they can make the long distance thing work. Rated: 4/5 Jan 7, 2015 Full Review Caroline Preece TV Equals Some of Switched at Birth's usual problems are still around in spite of the brand new setting... but then there are splendid scenes such as the one between Kathryn and Regina, and you're reminded of how much you miss this family when they're gone. jon c It’s kinda funny how Season 3 ended on a Christmas episode. But it was interesting to see the show would be if Bay and Daphne hadn’t been switched. Their lives would be totally ended up differently. The cliffhanger ended on such a powerful note with Bay taking the heat for Daphne’s actions. Season 4 starts with Daphne now having a chance for the future she dreamed of going to college. Bay after getting back with Emmett still plans to go with him to Los Angeles after her probation is over yet it isn’t the easiest transition. After that's settled Bay and Tank unfortunately make a big mistake that blows everything out of proportion. Travis even makes two startling confessions to Bay that changes everything we knew about him. Daphne has moved onto campus and at first she’s excited for classes. Although it has its shortcomings since they require her to have a certified interpreter so she can keep up. She also meets Mingo, another student who has a reputation for sleeping around with other women. Does he have more depth than that? Emmet’s mom has set up UMFC as a university for the deaf community since Carlton is no longer around. But he’s having a hard time dealing with how Bay is being punished for something she didn’t do. Emmet and Bay face the ultimate battle for their relationship too. Regina also turned down going with Wes to Hawaii. She also may be moving out of the Kennish’s once the girls have moved out on their own. A new romance arrives too with its own baggage. Toby has a new romance with a Carlton staff member Daphne and there may be a new member of the family joining. Kathyrn and John also face financial troubles among other things. This season deals with many more harsh subject matter from serving time for punishment to sexual assault to long distance relationships to more than one kind of individuals with special needs. Just because something is rare doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Everyone has secrets they’re not proud of. People will always point fingers. What's wrong with abnormal? When all is said and done you know your own kid, no doctors, no experts. Season 4 shakes things up so much. The finale is bittersweet and gives Bay and Daphne new paths to life. Season 5 looks like it intends to wrap up everything in fine fashion. But will it be happy or otherwise? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
