Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Handmaid's Tale has lost its urgency after spreading its once-arresting premise thin in a season focused on vengeance's consequences, but the women of Gilead are still played with compelling exactitude.

John Doyle Globe and Mail It is not entirely blissful and benign, the Canada featured here. There are more supporters of Gilead than before, people who sympathize with the hard-line, right-wing religious country next door. Thematically, this is a fierce twist. Sep 21, 2022 Full Review Linda Holmes NPR The show is still about June, and about Serena, more than anything else. It cannot be engineered into something it is not. But its examination of these two women embraces a more complicated dynamic than it once did. Sep 16, 2022 Full Review Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) The biggest question of all, of course, is simply why Gilead didn’t stick June on the wall long ago. For all that it remains sadly relevant and oddly compelling, that’s the great flaw at the heart of The Handmaid’s Tale. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 15, 2022 Full Review William Schwartz Book & Film Globe It’s very hard to take The Handmaid’s Tale seriously as speculative fiction unless a person’s already bought into the premise. Mar 1, 2023 Full Review Aaron Phillips But Why Tho? A Geek Community The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 gets off to a slow start but the deeper into the season you get the bigger the plot becomes, and the more monumentally twisted the rewards are. Rated: 7.5/10 Jan 14, 2023 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound While she has had some starring moments, Strahovski really shows what she is capable of this season. It is truly eye-opening. She brings chilling, broken, vulnerable, strong, and half crazed to the table at a moment’s notice. All with incredible realism. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 28, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Tom W Comments seasons 1 through 5. Really tiring of the long lingering camera shots of Moss glaring, scowling, surprise, or whatever. By now we know when to hit the fast forward, so we can get through the episodes more quickly, streamlining the excesses of editing through the Moss glares. Would really like to see a more fresh look to the direction and editing, relying upon story and acting more, and creative indulgence less. It's really limiting the series, and dating it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review F C I couldn't disagree more with the majority of these audience reviews. I won't even entertain trying to argue against the belief that there was plot holes, lack of character development or lack of chemistry between Luke and June, I mean they were separated for 5 years. People just think they're gonna return to the way they were. Give me a break. Everyone thinks their a critic these days, let's leave the writing to people who do it for a living. If you started disliking it at season 3 then you should have just stopped watching it. Clearly its engaging enough for you to keep watching and then take the extra time to rant on here about how you could do a better job. Ughhhh, these are the kind of people that would more than likely end up signing up to join the Gilead cult, lol. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/18/24 Full Review Patrick C I love the show, but this was a boring season. I hope next season is better. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Mars K I got tired of watching a close up of Elizabeth Moss's face every 2 seconds. The story doesn't make sense anymore. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/04/24 Full Review JULIE C I couldn't take Moss's grimacing weird faces shot from 2 mm away from the camera anymore. What a shame; the initial episodes were riveting. The gloominess and slow pace got to me, and I gave up. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/23 Full Review Anna L A 27% audience score sounds about right. Whoever decided to spend an entire season on Luke should be hung on the wall. If you are trying to sell the audience on your weakest character don't retcon them in the 8th inning and above all make sure the lead character and the estranged husband have some sort of chemistry together, it was hard to watch. This season was a complete dud. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
