      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Well-acted and respectful to the victims of an unspeakably horrific murder spree, The Long Shadow is a sobering and unfussy dramatization of a dark chapter in British history.

Charles D Toby is always a pleasure to watch. But yet again somebody decided to change the facts for a gurl.boss character. The second victim, the married hoo ker? In REAL LIFE it was her HUSBAND that wanted her to do this...and THAT made her death a tragedy. In this fiction thwy made her the fictional gurl boss who sacrificed herself for her kids by selling herself bravely. And I. The FICTIONAL version she dearved little sympathy for putting herself there for a few Christmas presents The truth is better...the reason for the change is obvious...they wanted to make her appear independent and brave...instead she ends up with many wondering if she had been less keen on self debasement this woukd not have happened AND the husband looks sympathetic!! The real truth is better, both in fact and in drama Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Phil T Interesting story but drug out and slow. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Marcel d A story about the victims of a serial killer. This is important to note. So many times the victims are reduced to mere clues that lead to the killer. This series attempts to flip this around - quite successfully I might add. A brilliant watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Julia A A true crime series which doesn't focus on the killers but on the victims and the mysogynistic actions of the police that botchered the investigation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Joy G Really derailed fascinating British period drama about serial murderer Peter Sutcliff. The always excellent Toby Jones and a talented cast pull you in right away. Highly recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review Rikke B If I didn’t know its a true story I wouldn’t believe that the police was this incompetent back in the day. Nick Schager The Daily Beast This engrossing limited series recognizes that such tales are less about their specific fiends and more about ingrained misogyny and the lasting damage it causes women. Mar 21, 2024 Full Review Graeme Blundell The Australian Arnold’s direction is simply impeccable, highly cinematic in the sense that you are aware of a deliberate hand guiding the visuals, always in touch with Jay’s taut, elided dialogue. Oct 13, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) It’s almost 50 years since British serial killer Peter Sutcliffe murdered the first of 13 women in Leeds, and this damning limited series looks back on his horrific crimes with a considered focus. Rated: 4/5 Oct 5, 2023 Full Review Lacy Baugher Tellyvisions Rather than show us the grisly specifics of their deaths, The Long Shadow instead chooses to show us the lives of Sutcliffe's victims, from their interests and passions to the holes their absences leave behind in the world. Mar 26, 2024 Full Review Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) The attention to detail was superb, as was a cast that included Katherine Kelly, Toby Jones, Daniel Mays, and David Morrissey. Some Yorkshire accents were more convincing than others, but this took nothing away from the overall authenticity. Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Aidan Smith Scotsman Praise the writing (George Kay) and the acting by all means, but no matter the drama’s compassionate take, it’s about the stuff of collective nightmares...
