Drew Gregory Autostraddle There was something poignant to me about starting the show with Maura coming out and ending it with her dying. It's a nice bookend, and makes a very clear point, that the first "death" was not a death at all, but really all of their beginning. Oct 28, 2021 Full Review Riese Bernard Autostraddle I love Transparent and I love musicals, so why wouldn't I love this? What was your favorite song? Oct 28, 2021 Full Review Emily St. James Vox The musical finale is, God bless it, so weird that you'll always be more distracted by how it bursts into song at inopportune moments than distracted by its incredibly earnest attempts to keep its formerly most recognizable star offscreen. Oct 2, 2019 Full Review Farah Cheded Film School Rejects The show's themes seem to be in natural harmony with the musical form; the transition a perfectly fitting choice. But for all those well-reasoned parallels, something precious feels lost in the show's segue into out-and-out theatricality. Oct 7, 2019 Full Review Naomi Gordon-Loebl The Nation "Musicale Finale" is outrageous and maybe too much-and for that reason, it might be the perfect way for Transparent to go out. Oct 4, 2019 Full Review Christopher James AwardsCircuit.com Any given 30 minutes of the original four seasons packs more laughs, tears, cringes and character development than this 100 minute waste. Gary S There is a much deeper story here than first meets the eye. The Musicale Finale is full of symbolism. You must pay careful attention in order to get it all. The Finale might as well be subtitled, "Run From Your Father's House," because that's what it's all about. That’s a direct citation from Genesis 12:1, the moment when God first calls upon Abram (later Abraham) to leave his homeland and everything familiar. "God said to Abram: Go forth from your land, your birthplace, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you." The Finale is about the Pfefferman family members finally freeing themselves from generations of secrecy, lies, and pain that were handed down as inherited trauma from the Holocaust. Watch it again and see how that thread flows through the entire Finale, culminating in "Joyocaust." Pay special attention throughout to Gaby Hoffmann's character Ari, especially when Maura (speaking through Ava) tells Ari, "You know, it's not too late to finish what you started." That's not a throwaway line. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review tom m Complete series. I'd call it more a drama than a comedy … a drama with comedic accents. Jeffry Tambor's characters was a bit too self-centered for my tastes (Tambor plays that sort of character well). Initially the series was interested, but after a while the hyperbolic dysfunction of the family became tedious. Also, as the series progressed they amped up the Jewish culture troupes, which also got a bit much at times. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved this series, but this has to be my most disapointing TV finale of all time, including Game of Thrones. The writing generally seems more ham fisted than past seasons, but the biggest problem is that they tried to make it a musical. The songs are badly written, badly performed, and just don't make sense at all in this quiet dramedy series. Every time a character starts singing you just want them to shut up. "Your Border is My Trigger" was stupidly bad almost to the point of self parody. The closing number, "Joyocaust", didn't so much offend me as baffle me. How could anyone think this is a good way to spend the last five minutes of this show and send off these characters? This finale was a slap in the face to fans. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Judith Ligh gives a stellar performance that needs to be recognized in this satysfing musical finale of one of the most interesting series ever created. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member A superb finale, full of pain and joy and healing and reflection and so much more. The story may center on Jewish culture, but all of humanity can take lessons from it. Beautifully done. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought it was FANTASTIC!
