"Politics is about people," former Sen. Selina Meyer is fond of saying. Unfortunately, the people Meyer, a charismatic leader and rising star in her party, meets after becoming vice president are nothing like she expected, but everything she was warned about. "Veep" follows the VP as she puts out political fires, juggles her public schedule and private life, and does everything within her limited powers to improve her dysfunctional relationship with the chief executive. Meyer's trusted -- and some not-so-trusted -- sidekicks include chief of staff Amy, one-time spokesperson Mike, and right-hand man Gary.

Critics Consensus

Brash and bonkers as ever, Veep bows out with an unapologetically absurd final season that solidifies its status as one of TV's greatest comedies.

Esther Zuckerman Thrillist The often brilliant comedy ended its seven-season run with an episode that highlighted the best of its brutality. Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com And yet, while it may not be quite as insightful or scathing as it once was, "Veep" is still one of the best shows on TV, largely because it has arguably the best ensemble, all of whom return at the top of their game. Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Alissa Wilkinson Vox But in the end, if Veep is a show about political addiction, then the seventh season promises a look at what people do to either get sober or lean into their vices full throttle. Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Prahlad Srihari Firstpost Veep often felt like the anti-West Wing, as Iannucci replaced Aaron Sorkin's reverential treatment and ideological haggling of Washington politics, with a bullying contest of utmost vulgarity which seemed symptomatic of the times. Jul 24, 2020 Full Review Carissa Pavlica TV Fanatic This is the way comedy is supposed to be. Rated: 5/5 Dec 11, 2019 Full Review Bonnie Stiernberg Glamour Veep should be remembered as one of the best ensemble casts ever, with Louis-Dreyfus surrounded by an absolute murderer's row of comedic talent. Olivia W A scathing political commentary and satire like no other. Veep is hilarious, heart breaking, infuriating — it holds a mirror up to the American people and the systems we have created (and abused). Though the show loses its footing somewhere between the first season and the last, Season 7 ties up the series nicely. It’s a “gloves-off” season that leaves nothing off the table. Everything is fair game — Jonah is running for President, Amy is pregnant, and Selina continues to blur the lines of “the ends justifying the means.” How far will she go for the ultimate power-grab, to become the President of the United States? Season 7 answers just that, in a sometimes-over-the-top but often enjoyable series conclusion. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/25 Full Review Pat B This show had some excellent moments, but I must admit that - like Armando's The Thick of It - the endless, unrelenting misanthropy does become a little wearying. I loved how Selina brutally handled Gary in the end (ouch!) but it would have been nice to have a single character you could actually back at some point, or even just some nice traits to observe, once in a while, among the cast of villains. The show, otherwise, becomes a little monotonous; like Ted Lasso in reverse. Just as that show wears you down with its endless positivity, the unceasing despair of this one became exhausting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Catherine R This show in the earlier seasons is hilarious and such a great comedy; this season, however, was nowhere near the same level of writing or humor. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/29/24 Full Review Corey W Veep is scathingly mean and outrageously brash throughout its seven-season run. The writing is razor sharp and the characters are all delightfully awful and well-realized. It's a shame to see it go, but Veep can ride into the sunset knowing that it could arguably lay claim to the title of best TV comedy of the past decade. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review tom m Some comic relief. In the early seasons I found the non-steady cam and sporadic, fast zooms annoying. I guess I don't really see the charm in the series that got it such acclaim. I'm pleased they finally added descriptive audio. After a while the comic "charm" of certain characters just became old & tedious. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member They ran out of material and the show becomes painful to watch. The first three seasons excellent. Stop at that point Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
