Critics Consensus

Though it hits the occasional sour note, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist manages to carry a pretty enjoyable tune, thanks in large part to the always charming Jane Levy.

Vicky Kalpaxis Observer These can be all-encompassing social issues, but rather than develop them within an episode or season, the show argues that their solutions should be easy to find... It resolves this cliffhanger fairly quickly. Nothing extraordinary about that, right? Mar 19, 2020 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" is at its most charming when it allows itself to be silly. The musical numbers aren't overly polished or elaborate but have just enough potential for a visual surprise. Mar 10, 2020 Full Review Lucy Mangan Guardian But the actors - every one of them, every minute - work like Trojans to hold it all together. That they come so close to succeeding [it] deserves recognition. An award, perhaps. Or, ideally, better parts in a better show next time. Rated: 2/5 Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Pajiba The music simultaneously elevates and complements the material seamlessly. Dec 15, 2020 Full Review CJ Sheu Critics at Large [T]he merits of the show: the singing and dancing, the characters' emotional bonds, and - its greatest strength - writing that takes complicated human emotions seriously. Jul 25, 2020 Full Review Maria Lattila Film Inquiry Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist guarantees laughs, bops, and tears and season 1 serves as a perfect musical treat for the fans of the genre. Carin J Why I did this show not make it? It's really fun and different and cute and the only negative thing I can say about it is that sometimes one of the less interesting songs to me might go a little long but I mean that's it like I completely binge watched this and man I wish I had when it first came out. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Vicki M This show is cute, charming, funny, and heart wrenching. Such a unique concept pulled off by a charming cast. Around episode 10/11 they had an arc that I didn't vibe as much with, but it wasn't horrible. I'm looking forward to watching season 2, and will recommend Season 1 to many! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Charlotte M This is the most wonderfully bittersweet and heartbreaking show I have ever seen. It leaves viewers crying and laughing so hard that they keep watching the show episode after episode. Watching this show with my family was such an emotional whirlwind, the characters and writers have gone above and beyond to make this such an incredible show for families. A truly breathtaking show.
