Matt Fagerholm RogerEbert.com At a time when the physical toll of punishing sports is being reevaluated in film, it's difficult for me to get much enjoyment out of the theatrical machismo and unsettling masochism on display here, no matter how "staged" it may be. Rated: 2/4 Jul 15, 2016 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times It aims to do for wrestling what the "Magic Mike" movies did for male stripping. But imagine a much slacker "Magic Mike," without the fun or the social commentary. Jul 14, 2016 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Their enthusiasm for the sport and its traditions is contagious, spanning the generations. Jul 14, 2016 Full Review Mariana Fernández Butaca Ancha Affable, traditionalist, folkloric and entertaining... [Full review in Spanish] Dec 28, 2017 Full Review Oktay Ege Kozak The Playlist A loving, honest, and downright fascinating look at a passion-filled tradition that's mostly foreign to a lot of the non-Hispanic American audience. Rated: B- Jul 15, 2016 Full Review Eric Monder Film Journal International Die-hard wrestling fans might enjoy Lucha Mexico. Everyone else should steer clear. Audience Member I love everything Mexican and this captures Mexico and captures the beloved sport better than anything i have ever seen. Characters are vivid i can see Hollywood making this into an epic wrestling film with superheroes Kuddos to the filmmakers, great work for such a fun and ambitious indie film! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A seedy trip through Mexico's most-hallowed halls of professional wrestling, focusing on second-generation luchador Shocker, Blue Demon, Jr., the tragic Hijo Del Perro Aguayo and lovable CMLL mascot Kemonito. More a magical, masked mystery tour than revealing doc, still, fans of Lucha Libre should enjoy the trip. Features clips with two grapplers who died tragically before the completition of filming. ***/5* Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A joy to experience up close these Mexican athletes and understand this passion filled tradition. The documentary captures the lives in a very real way that allows the subjects to talk and share their stories and love for the sport. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member as a fan of Lucha Libre, this documentary is what I was waiting for,it might be appealing mostly for fans, but it in the end it will show what the modern era of Lucha Libre is all about. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member As a big fan of Lucha Libre and the culture around it, I thoroughly enjoyed Lucha Mexico. I don't know if the movie would hold any appeal to people who aren't fans of Lucha, however, including pro wrestling fans who prefer the American style.
