Translating to Duty/Shame and set in both Tokyo and London, "Giri/Haji" is a thriller about a Tokyo detective named Kenzo Mori, scouring the London underworld to find his allegedly deceased brother, Yuto. Yuto was accused of brutally murdering the nephew of a yakuza member, which could lead to the onset of a gang war. Kenzo's investigation into the disappearance lures him into dangerous elements of the corrupt underworld of London's criminal circuit. Nick Schager The Daily Beast Everything's intertwined, and the fact that the series never becomes overly messy-and manages to keep a rigid focus on its well-drawn characters... is a testament to its craftsmanship. Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Scott Bryan BBC.com I've never seen a British show filmed in the UK that is 75% in another language. I've never seen that ambition in a British show before. Jul 15, 2020 Full Review Doreen St. Felix The New Yorker Violently stylish, and also plain violent, Giri/Haji is a filial drama crossed with a sprawling, sexy police thriller. May 9, 2020 Full Review Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut There is simply nothing else like this anywhere on television. Rated: 5/5 Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Diane Pershing Malibu Times ...all of the cast deserves mention, but space does not permit it. Really good stuff here, despite some bits that simply don't work. Give it a shot; I'm so very glad I did. Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Brian Phillips The Ringer ...there's something fascinating, and to me kind of heartening, about the idea of old-fashioned character studies starting to demand avant-garde formal complexity from shows that might otherwise have been just some more by-the-numbers genre fare... Boksi L You can see when they're letting talented and creative people find each other, do what they love and how they prefer it, especially when that happens to bear fruit. In a perfect world, most TV and film would be made like that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Sal D Compelling plot with multifaceted approach that I did not find cliche at all. Acting was too shlep as well. My only quibble is that I do think we needed 8 episodes - the plot line could have been curate into 4 maybe 6 episodes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Zoe W Beautifully shot production with some brilliant performances. Very clever way that the narrative is told. Would definitely recommend! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Candice Z Wonderful, complex characters. An intricate plot to drive the characters. And a surprising, artistic rendition summarizing it all near the end. It took me till mid episode 2 to really grab me, because the show slowly "opens the kimono" to reveal itself. It is emotionally rich with some realistic but excellent action sequences. But the words lead us here, both the said and also the unsaid. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Martynas L 1 Star for cinematography, that is all - No matter how long I've spent watching the show, there has always been something missing... Throughout the show, I'd keep asking myself a lot of questions, and not the kind that'd keep me wanting more... After finishing it, I could not help but feel glad that it's over... Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Andrei D Starts off slow but delivers some great moments Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
