"The Stand" is author Stephen King's post-apocalyptic vision of a world decimated by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of 108-year-old Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors including Stu Redman, an ordinary working-class factory man; Nadine Cross, a deeply conflicted woman; Frannie Goldsmith, a pregnant young woman; and Nick Andros, a young deaf and mute man. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite an A-list ensemble and a smattering of poignant moments, The Stand's extended runtime doesn't make for better storytelling, leaving its expansive cast stranded in a cluttered apocalypse.

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Stephen King's 1100-page apocalypse has unfolded in captivating style, maintaining the vibrant Stephen Kingyness of the characters and ratcheting up the tension at will -- even if all the bouncing around in time makes it feel rather choppy. Jan 27, 2021 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au With its many subplots, some more compelling than others, it's an uneven series that's not so much a must-watch as a can-watch. Jan 17, 2021 Full Review Michael Idato Sydney Morning Herald Amber Heard is a little iffy as Nadine Cross, and the magnificent Whoopi Goldberg needs no introduction, but Marsden's Stu Redman is an engaging and buoyant hero and Alexander Skarsgard's Randall Flagg is compelling in every way Rated: 3/5 Jan 13, 2021 Full Review Sayan Ghosh The Hindu Stephen King’s apocalypse epic is brought to life stirringly. Sep 27, 2023 Full Review David Reddish Queerty With COVID-19 plaguing the world, The Stand takes on an eerie, postmodern creepiness it might not otherwise have. Jason M Transposing a Stephen King novel to film is difficult, I will give it that, but this takes it to an entirely new level. CBS stripped every meaningful moment in the book and attempted to make it their own "based" on King's novel. I would like to say it was a swing and miss but they didn't even fully swing the bat. The plot is rushed to the point of pushing through 70 percent of King's novel within the first episode while feeling bland and empty throughout the season. I had high hopes but this was an absolute travesty. Thank God there is only a single season but even that should not have been allowed as poorly as it was done. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Audience Member Trash. Hardcore trash. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/20/24 Full Review Morgan B I managed to get through six and a half of the nine episodes. It's very boring, and I couldn't care less about any of the characters. I don't think I was supposed to root for the one who wanted to kill all the others. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review raygunwould W They took the story, masterfully written in an order that made sense and rearranged it into a confusing mess. I've read the book twice and I still have trouble understanding who is who and what is happening in this series. My wife has never read the book and only seen bits of the 1994 mini series. She's already bored and confused with it after one episode. I don't care about any of the characters. I was excited to see some of the actors in this but their talent was absolutely wasted. The need to re-cut the whole thing back into chronological order or something and it might be medicore. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Audience Member I really do love this series. I am a big fan of the first adaption of The Stand as well as the audio-book. I binge streamed this show and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the premise of an apocalyptic world the way that Steven King writes about it. I'm reminded me of I am legend by Richard Matheson. This is a great genre.
