Melinda Houston The Age (Australia) While these six hours are crammed with horrifying and shameful information, we’re not encouraged to condemn. Or at least, not blindly or wholeheartedly. We are encouraged to think about the ways in which history might be repeating. Rated: 4/5 Jan 26, 2023 Full Review Rebecca Nicholson Guardian This is unvarnished history that attempts to scratch away the surface myths – and it is well worth your time. Rated: 4/5 Jan 10, 2023 Full Review Judy Berman TIME Magazine Ken Burns’ typically textbook-like but genuinely illuminating series revisits the familiar story of how the Third Reich’s exploitation of its own Big Lie led to the Holocaust. Oct 3, 2022 Full Review Ruth Franklin The New York Review of Books As demonstrated in The US and the Holocaust, antisemitic, xenophobic, and racist groups in American society had long used their political power to keep out immigrants perceived as undesirable, including Jews. Tony W This is deep and uncompromising look at how depraved humans can be and how easily common folk can turn their backs on those that need the most help. The look at this shocking history shows we have overlooked its impact and continue to repeat it, even the Jews are now doing their own version with an extreme right wing government in Israel committing their very own atrocities against the Palestinians, who they call terrorists. The Israeli parliament should be made to watch this frame by frame. This series will stay with me for a long time as I watch us ignore it's message and continue our depravity via the "military complex" that all major countries of the World spend trillions on and leave refugees to stave, freeze and remain stateless. We should all be ashamed of ourselves, it maybe you one day..... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review ed m Another great Ken Burns documentary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Jennifer N Timely Ken Burns documentary. It serves as a yet another warning to the world about the mendacity of the human species made manifest through the posturing of the USA on the world stage as the beacon of freedom. OK, so the USA does the dirty work of more sophisticated countries but it's time isn't it, that we said: enough is enough. It has been convenient for more sophisticated countries to allow the USA to control and edit history to its advantage. That's the quid pro quo. This documentary provides the reasons. We are a feral species that believes in its own marketing hype while at the same time preying on those made vulnerable in the hope of some pitiful material advantage. However, the question is: how much longer will the good among us stand by and watch sovereign states and cultures be destroyed. The USA froths at the mouth to lead the charge because it means more bucks, business and a sense of ultimate power. In reality, the USA's idea of liberty is shared by us all and it goes something like this: in the name of liberty let us kick in your door, kill your family, shoot up your village, town or city, destroy your country and then leave you to it. This suits our purpose: 'our' being usually white, Western culture. Reference Vietnam, Laos, Syria and Iraq just to name a few and now, Ukraine by default. Moreover, the rest of us stand by and let this happen. Thanks Ken Burns for yet another reminder of the extent to which we as a species are deplorable and derelict. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Richard B Unvarnished Truth Pulling no punches, Ken Burns tells the pitiful tale of the US and the Holocaust, and a sorry tale it is, drawing a straight line from Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh to Elon Musk and Donald Trump. It should surprise no one, that American racism was a part basis for German anti-Jewish laws. Just as we killed the Indians to get their land, Hitler planned to kill all Eastern European Jews on his way to taking over all the land up to the Urals. America First, which championed anti- war and anti-immigrant policies dominated America during the 1930's. Pro fascism was widespread in the USA until 1941 and elements in the State Department, Cordell Hull chief among them, stopped Roosevelt from opening up to change. Once Henry Morgenthau finally opened Roosevelt's eyes to State Department obstructionism, America changed tack - but it was already too late for 5 million Jews. The series is brilliantly written and edited, Peter Coyote's Henry Fonda impersonation is spot on, and all I can say is that, if you think you know this history, think again. Better still, spend 6 hours of your life on this exemplary documentary mini-series. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Stephen C Vital Ken Burns documentary which covers Americas troubled History with the Holocaust in War torn Europe. See this and learn how we must NEVER let this happen again Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/10/23 Full Review Daniel K This six-hour examination of the U.S. relationship to what has come to be called the holocaust is an extraordinarily far-reaching and yet deeply intimate retelling of the fraught history leading up to, during and after World War II. From Hitler taking so much inspiration for his own xenophobic and murderous policies from the way America treated both Native Americans and Blacks, to the world's hesitation to take in fleeing refugees even AFTER the Nazi killing machine was well-known, this brilliant, must-see series reminds us of so much that we are, once again, at risk of repeating today.
