In a tale of power, family, love and betrayal, "The White Princess" -- adapted from Philippa Gregory's best-selling novel of the same name -- follows up the BBC/Starz miniseries "The White Queen." It's told from the perspective of three noblewomen waging an ongoing battle for the English throne at the conclusion of the War of the Roses. Promised in marriage to the newly crowned King Henry VII in hopes that it will unite the Kingdom, Princess Elizabeth (aka Lizzie) instead resents and plots against him. She matches wits and wills with Lady Margaret Beaufort, King Henry VII's mother, each maneuvering to gain his trust. Meanwhile, Lizzie's mother, Dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville, struggles with rumors that her long-lost son Prince Richard is alive -- forcing Elizabeth into choosing between her new Tudor husband and the boy who could be her own blood and the rightful York King.

Just 15 years ago (already!) we got Showtime's The Tudors, which evidently inspired this series. It's the same formula; a Renaissance-era soap opera with amazing costumes and history tweaked for maximum dramatic effect. If you like, this is the prequel to The Tudors, which started with Henry VIII in about 1513, this one here covers 1485 to 1495. Like its role model, this one dispenses with a certain amount of realism in depicting the king, neither series had an actor who looks like the relevant King Henry, nor do they age throughout the series. Henry VII actually looked rather like Putin, with a long thin face and straggly blondish hair. Apart from some quibbles with history (Jasper Tudor was not smothered with a pillow, Perkin Warbeck had no kiddies), and armor that is a Hollywood fantasy, the series does good job of illustrating the power plays in late medieval England. Since the original novel was written by a woman, the women get plenty of attention in this series and spend their time scheming, trying to outdo each other and outbitch each other. Some things never change. The series gives a pretty good feel for the period, where playing fast and loose with royal favor could be life- and body-shortening, but stick to a textbook for your school history exam.
