John S. Bartley

John Bartley is an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer who is best known for his work on the sci-fi television dramas "Lost" and "The X-Files." Born in Wellington, Bartley grew up in New Zealand, where he had little access to television, but developed a love for film at the local cinema. Bartley dreamed of film school, but there were no such institutions in New Zealand at the time. However, his mother's involvement in the local theater scene gave Bartley access to theater technicians who taught him about lighting. When he moved to Sydney, Australia, he landed a job as a lighting technician for Channel 7. From there he was hired to shoot 1989's "Beyond the Stars," a science fiction drama that starred Martin Sheen and Christian Slater. The following year he was serving as the director of photography on the popular undercover cop drama "21 Jump Street." While Bartley's gone on to shoot a variety of projects, he is best known for his work in science fiction, having worked on "The X-Files," "The Visitor," "Roswell," "Eight Legged Freaks," and "Lost." His work in the worlds of science-fiction has garnered him much acclaim, including three American Society of Cinematographers Award nominations, three Emmy nominations that resulted in one win, and one Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award.
