When Bonnie Howard (Annie Potts) realizes she's pregnant with another man's child, she can't bear to face her race car driver husband Stanley (Robert Carradine). Instead, she moves out and sets off to find an abortion clinic in a nearby city. Along the way, she meets free spirit Rita Harris (Margot Kidder), and an unlikely friendship ensues. Howard and Harris struggle to build a new life together -- even as poverty and self-destructive behaviors seem to keep true happiness at bay.
