Audience Member The aptly titled His New Job (get it? It's because it's Charlie's new job at Essanay too, after leaving Keystone! Clever!) has Charlie playing a bumbling clumsy stagehand working on a film set. When one of the actors becomes indisposed Charlie is hired to replace him. And as you might expect, he doesn't exactly do an ideal job. His New Job is fairly mediocre for Chaplin, especially considering how great most of his other Essanay shorts. There are some great moments, and the entire film is pretty funny overall, but it's not exactly spectacular. And there's not as many funny jokes as usual. The story isn't that interesting and there's not much going on. Despite all this, there's still some great moments of physical comedy and the overall experience is pretty fun. A tad disappointing but it's all forgivable, because Charlie is just, well, he's just great. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Early Chaplin short with lots of physical comedy. Ben Turpin is great as the film extra, coordinating his facial expressions with his movements to convey pure comic effect. Chaplin's role here, although different from his immortal Tramp character, is very similar in appearance; only the unconditional sensibility of the latter that made an icon out of him was completely absent here; one-sided slapstick hilarity is all. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Another Chaplin short. Not one of my favorite. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member 8/10. This wonderful Charlie Chaplin short, Charlie is interviewing for a job, some wonderful slapstick scenes with his classic touch of humor. He is amazingly funny, the way he moves and much of his humor is in just simple touches. A delightful film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member It's interesting how often Charlie plays an unlikable boor in these early shorts. When he does, as in this film, it's difficult to really get into the action beyond the absolute silliness of the whole thing. It doesn't help that the set pieces here aren't all that interesting or funny to begin with. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This one was a bit better. It questioned society's norms and the humor was better since Charlie was aware of his surroundings and trying to cause a little mischief at times. He tries to change the rules at the studio hiring office but finally gets a job on a movie set. He's clumsy doing all kinds of set construction work and struggles with every kind of authority he meets. The limp sword is hilarious too. Again it ends with a manic anarchic fight.
