Audience Member A deeply haunting documentary which really shows off the unique eye for dark visual poetry director Michelangelo Antonioni would utilize throughout his life. The subjects are Rome's street cleaners, but the film looses interest in their technical work about halfway through and instead becomes a series of images both unsettling and beautiful as we see them interact simply with the grimy underbelly of the city. This lack of focus is what make Antonioni's work beautiful, and he shows just as much care photographing these lower-class folks as he does the beautiful Monica Vitti later in his oeuvre.
