James Marsh South China Morning Post Audiences of a certain age will be swept up by the music, fashion and overall rose-tinted infatuation of that '90s heyday, and for them at least, Sunny will trigger laughter and tears aplenty. Rated: 3/5 Nov 20, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member This movie, as you may know, is a remake of the korean movie by the same name, Sunny (2011), which is one of my all time favorite movies. I recently discovered that a japanese version existed, set in the 90's and with some few changes, so I knew I had to watch it. For the first couple of minutes there where a lot of similarities, which I was not mad about, but, half an hour in, it started to become pointless to me. For example, it tries so hard to be just like the original movie, but it ends up missing so many details it feels annoying. What makes Sunny so special is the connection between friends and how it does not changes even though time passes, but this new version fails as we, as viewers, can't connect with all of the gang. Also, what I think made the less sense, was the gang's name: "sunny", which in the korean version, they were named after Bonney M's song by the same name, but in this movie, they just name the gang like that for no reason at all. The movie lacks the soundtrack we all loved in the korean version and there are no likable characters whatsoever or even rememberable. Finally, I may understand why they made a remake (I also know about another one they made... think china?) because the movie has a great plot and I can see Hollywood or Netflix making its own way into the list, however, I hope it does not turns out like this version. It may be filled with 90's japanese nostalgia for some, but for others, like me, it is just a fans dream to make it into ones own desire to bring back old happy memories.
