David F This is a great, short documentary about some American Drive In movie theaters. It's not really a history of the drive in but a sort of check-in on the current state of the business circa 2022. There's a pretentious French voice-over philosophizing about America and cinema and cars and Route 66 and the open road which sort of knits it all together, but in between those passages (which I kind of adored, but they were kind of overly philosophical) there are profiles of several drive in movie theaters that are still doing business. They interview mostly the operators but also some of the movie goers and it elicits some powerful commentary on the on-going influence of outdoor, in-person film-going. Some of the anecdotes are really interesting: one drive-in was being eyed for the site of a future solar farm before its fans got wind of the proposal and made the solar farmers withdraw their plans. Another drive-in has been turned into an actual Inn where you can stay, and an artist is using it as his canvas to create art. There's also some really interesting scenes showing how they make the popcorn and how they operate the new digital projectors that is just a really classic on the job work profile that really holds up the Common Man as an exemplar of someone doing something workaday that is nonetheless important and appreciated by their community. Overall, this is a great documentary that you'll love if you love cinema. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
