Grady Dodd (Hank Williams Jr.) is a good old country boy with a smile on his face, a guitar on his knee and a song in his heart. His curmudgeonly uncle, Kermit (Ed Begley), may sneer at his nephew's talents, but, after foolishly gambling away all the family's money, Kermit pushes Grady to make some quick cash by recording a song for a local television program. Much to Kermit's surprise and chagrin, Grady's catchy country ditty quickly becomes a hit and hurls him into the spotlight.
